posticon Lansing Babe Ruth Team Wins Quad County Championship

brb_brandondavis120Valesente Diamond at Freeman field has been quiet for a few weeks now with the Bombers outstanding season coming to a close.  The top two Quad County teams changed that when they came together, on the last day in July, for the battle of the big cats in the Quad County, Babe Ruth 2013 Championship game.  Lansing grappled a hard fought 6 – 1 win from the paws of the Dryden team.  Discipline, confidence, teamwork, sportsmanship and heart were the tools of the Lansing team to become the League and Playoff Champions.

A much disciplined defense and seven innings of confident pitching held the hard hitting Dryden team to only one unearned run.  The Bobcats made several great plays but they had two key defensive plays, both from rookie players, which kept the Lions from gaining any momentum.  In the top of the third inning, one out and a runner on second base, starting Second Baseman, Matt Gonyea snagged a hard hit line drive and touched second base before the runner could tag up, to complete an unassisted, inning ending, double play.

10u_mark120The middle of July is often best known for its hot days, the scent of chicken barbecue, and the sound of children enjoying their escape from school. In Lansing, this is also the time when baseball fills the air. The sound of a ball hitting the catcher’s glove or the sound of the umpire shouting safe as the runner successfully makes it home before the throw.  The sound the bat hitting the ball and the chance to cheer on your team is what brought hundreds of people to the Lansing Town Fields during this past weekend for the Lansing 10U Baseball Festival.

The Lansing 10U Baseball Festival brought together six teams and over 80 area youth together for some friendly competition.  The festival was for boys and girls that were 10 years of age and under. Three teams from Lansing played in a round robin format against two teams from Ithaca and one team from Dryden. The round robin portion of the festival included a total of three games which were played on Friday and Saturday. The teams were then ranked by record and matched up for the finale on Sunday.

bobcat_120The Lansing Bobcats gained a new team member Monday -- an actual bobcat.  Carl Nedrow presented the stuffed cat, which will be displayed prominently in Lansing High School's trophy case, to the Lansing Board Of Education Monday.  The bobcat is a gift of Nedrow and his nephew Patrick Tierney, both Lansing athletes and graduates.

"I've always had a dream that I would donate a bobcat to the school," Nedrow said.  "My nephew, who played on the football team, had the same idea.  He came up with this cat that we could donate.  So here I am."

jvbaseball0515_120The JV baseball team finished with a regular season record of 16 – 0.  Continuing to play with poise, confidence and discipline the team defeated the Eagles, Blue Devils and the Blue Raiders in the last matchups of this season.  They started the week with an assertive, 24 – 3, win over Whitney Point.  The boys then traveled to Moravia where they took the lead and never let it go.  For their final regular season game the Bobcats battled their rival across the lake, defeating them 15 – 8.   They earned the title of IAC Large School North Champions and the right to compete in the IAC Large School championship game against the Waverly Wolverines.

The Whitney Point Eagles soared into Lansing only to be hooded and sent away by a committee of Bobcat pitchers.  Relying on the solid defense behind them, Corbin Atkins, Greg Lee, Ben Kutler, and Dominic Tarallo combined for six strikeouts and allowed only three runs.  The offense was alive from the start of the game.  Kyle Arrison batted a thousand going 1 for 1 with a two RBI single.  Logan Osterman went 2 for 3 with a double and a single.  Atkins, Kutler, Mikula, Tarallo, Jesse Richardson, Jared Strait and Owen Davis all batted five hundred.

posticon Wolves Undefeated Season Ended by Undefeated Bobcats

jv_basseball0509_120The JV baseball team has continued to improve in every aspect of the game.  They started the week with a confident, 12 – 0, shut out of Thomas Edison (TAE).  Then they dropped in on the Groton Indians and took a 13 -2 win.  The boys ended their week with a double header against the then undefeated Union Springs Wolves.  These games were the closest that the Cats have had so far this season.  Game one, 7 – 1, game two, 6 – 0.

TAE came to Lansing and ran into a sawmill of strikes and persistent bats.  Corbin Atkins took the mound and would not let it go.  He pitched a complete game, shut-out, with 10 K’s, two hits and one walk.  It was three up three down for five of the seven innings so he only faced an average of 3.3 batters per inning.  The defense never allowed a TAE player past second base.  Lansing’s starting catcher, Bryce Stanhope, picked off a player trying to steal second with a bullet to Ben Kutler.

posticon Bobcats Sweep Lions in the Battle of the JV Big Cats

jvbaseball_51_b_davis120Get out the dust pans.  The Bobcats JV Baseball team swept the Purple Lions of Dryden in a two game battle of the big cats. With solid pitching and respectable hitting, the Dryden team came over the hill to give Lansing one of the closest games yet this season.  The Lions held their heads high with the 14 – 6 loss and hoped to have their revenge the following day when they would host Lansing at their house.  The Bobcats denied them with a 14 – 3 win, putting the Bobcat's record at 9 – 0 for the season.

For their first meeting, 6’3” Logan Osterman took the mound.  Dryden battled at the plate taking several full counts, but Osterman held firm only allowing one run in three innings.  He struck out five of sixteen batters that he faced and only allowed three hits.  Corbin Atkins relieved Osterman in the fourth inning.  He did a sound job, striking out eight and allowing only two hits giving him the win.

posticon Three More Wins for Bobcats JV Baseball

jvbaseball4-26_120The number seven is considered lucky but, it wasn’t luck that put the Lansing Junior Varsity Baseball team’s record to seven and zero.  The team has been working hard, developing not only their skills but their discipline at the plate, sportsmanship and confidence in themselves and in their teammates.  The Moravia Blue Devils were almost blanked in their 20 – 1 loss against Lansing.  The Groton Indians didn’t fare much better when they hit the buzz saw of strikes from The Brandon and Brandon Show resulting in a 13 – 1 defeat.  Last Friday the Blue Raiders were caught between two storm fronts.  One was being carried by the wind from the west and the other was delivered by a bus from across the lake.  For their fourth game last week, the Bobcats shut the Blue Raiders out with a five inning, one hit, 7 – 0, victory.

Logan Osterman took the mound for his season debut, pitching four efficient innings and earning the win.  For the first two innings, he worked on developing some of his pitches the Blue Devils would get a few runners on base.  Osterman would then tighten down and strikeout the next three.  For the third and fourth innings the Lansing defense did their share by making good plays.  In total Osterman had seven K’s, two walks, and allowed only one run.  Bryce Stanhope came out from behind the dish as catcher to close the game as pitcher.  He also was very efficient, averaging only 15 pitches per inning.  Stanhope knew his team had his back and only had to strikeout two of the Moravia players to finish the game.
