The Lansing Athletic Hall of Fame inducted the Class of 2011 at a ceremony Saturday between the JV and Varsity basketball games that pitted Lansing against Union Springs.  Master of Ceremonies and Chairman of the Selection Committee Marty Christopher presented individual plaques to former three-sport star from the class of 1957 Don Worsell, and former Coach and Athletic Director, Ed Redmond. The 1983 Section IV Championship football team was also inducted, with nearly two dozen of the former team members returning for the induction ceremonies. This is the fourteenth annual induction ceremony since the first one in 1998.

posticon Lansing Girls Basketball Defeats Whitney Point and Union Springs

basketball_girls120The Lansing Girls Basketball team improved their record to 11-1 with two road wins, 41-30 over Whitney Point on Tuesday, and 56-16 over Union Springs on Wednesday.

On Tuesday Taylor Policay and Maura McCartney each had 9 points to lead the way for the Ladycats, while Shea McCartney had 7. Colby McCartney led the team in rebounds with 11, Carlene Fields and Shanna Shaff each had 3 assists, while Shaff had a team high 4 steals.

posticon Lansing Bowlers Strong Against Candor

bowling_120The Lansing Bobcats traveled to Owego Tuesday to bowl Candor in a cross match.  The Lansing Girls started out strong as they rolled a 707 series and followed that up with two more 700+ series en route to take all 4 points.

Vanesa Corey lead the LadyCats with a fine 169 - 480 series followed up by fellow senior Gianna Gentile's 469.  And then comes Melissa Seymore with a high game of 190 & a 428 series and Nicole Davis's 418 series as the last girls hit just over 2200 for the first time this season.

posticon Lansing Wrestlers Do Well at Watson Invitational

wrestlingEven without the services of returning State Champ William Koll, the Lansing wrestling team still fared well at the 2012 Mike Watson Invitational at Watkins Glen this past weekend.

Once again Corey Dake, Connor Lapresi, and Ryan Todd led the way to the Bobcats 9th place finish in the 21 team field. At 126 pounds, Dake had one technical fall and three pins , the last of which came at 5:44 of the third period in the finals versus Austin Bostwick of Waverly. That performance garnered Dake the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the light weights.

hockypeewee1The IYHA PeeWee 2 team, comprised of 9 Lansing residents, returned after a long holiday break to face two opponents last weekend with mixed results.  The first game found the PeeWees on the road Saturday, facing the Elmira Jackals at the home of the ECHL Elmira Jackals.

The game was a one-sided affair with the PeeWee 2 team scoring 5 times in the first period against a young and inexperienced Elmira squad.   Damian Valent led the charge with 3 goals and an assist over three periods dominated by the IYHA skaters.

posticon Lansing Bowlers Challenge Newark Valley Before and After Break

bowling_120The Lansing Bobcats traveled to Cardinal Lanes December 20 in Newark Valley for a key match between in the Large division of the IAC.  What a match it turned out to be!  You could say it was a shoot out, as the Lansing Boys came out with a first game of 940 to Newark Valley's 905.

The fireworks started as Brandon Emerick for Lansing started string strikes, as did Derek Fenn for Newark Valley. As both boys where rolling strikes thoughout this game Derek rolls a 279 to Brandon's 278, Troy Hradisky for Lansing rolls 207 as does Dustin Shoemaker for Newark Valley as Lansing wins the nail bitter 1015 to 990. Then Lansing went on to win the last game 998 to 960, what a match this was as nothing was decided until the last ball was rolled.

posticon Pee Wee Hockey Triumphs in December

hockypeewee1The  I.Y.H.A. Pee Wee 2 team continued rolling along in December, knocking down visitors from Mid-State and Oswego in two home games.

Against Mid-State, Ryan Besemer had another solid outing,  stopping all but one shots in an 6-1 game.  On the offensive side, Jack Babuka caught fire against the Mid-State defense by scoring 4 goals and assisting in another by the end of the day.  That 5 point day followed a 5 point effort by Josh Zajac just a week earlier.

posticon Bobcat Wrestlers Place in Tournament

wrestlingThe Lansing Wrestling Team competed in the 55th annual Windsor Christmas Tournament on December 28th and 29th.  Placing 7th in in the 22 team field, the Bobcats placed 6 of the 7 wrestlers entered in the tournament.

Leading the way, Corey Dake remained undefeated, beating Tyler Hall of Marathon in the 126 pound final. Lansing had a pair of runner-up finishes , Connor Lapresi, lost in over time to 2011 state placer Wes Blanding of Chittenango,and Ryan Todd also came up just short in the 182 pound final, losing 1-2 to another 2011 state qualifier, Keegan Cerwinski of Greene.

posticon Wins For Lansing Bowlers

bowling_120Odessa came to Helen Newman last week to bowl the Lansing Bobcats and tonight the Bobcats where ready for them. Both of Lansing's teams took all 4 points as the boys started to show what they are made of, as Branbon Emerick 235 - 618 lead the way with fellow senior troy Hradisky's 246 - 606 right behind and then followed by Thomas Bong's 510 series.

OM bright spot on the boys side was Aaron Fisher's 217 - 539 & Phil Humphries's 485 series. Now on the girls side the Lady Cats were paced by Gianna gentile's 434 and Nicole  Davis's 410 series as OM's Jordan Little was there pace setter with a 323.

wrestlingThe Lansing Wrestling team competed at Chenango Valley last weekend in 'The Valley Duals'. Though we went 1-3 as a team, no loss was more than 11 point gap.

We had 4 wrestlers extend their undefeated streaks. Returning State Champ William Koll continued his dominance going 4-0. Ryan Todd, A two time State runner-up, also remained unbeaten, with a 4-0 record. Corey Dake, and Connor Lapresi  each defeated 2011 State Tournament Qualifiers in their respective weight classes, on their way to 4-0 records. Dakota White contiues to improve, and for the first time in his Career was unbeaten  on the day, going 4-0.

posticon Ladycats Basketball Defeats Moravia and Trumansburg

basketball_girls120The Lansing Girls Varsity Basketball team improved to 5-0 following wins over Moravia and Trumansburg. The Ladycats traveled to Moravia last Friday and defeated the Blue Devils 37-17, with the defense limiting them to single digit scoring in all four quarters.

Colby McCartney led the way with 12 points and a team high 3 blocked shots, while Taylor Policay added 6 points and a team high 8 rebounds. Sabrina Tilton also contributed 6 points and Shea McCartney had 4 points and a team high 4 steals, Shanna Shaff had a team high 3 assists and figured prominently with her defensive effort throught the contest.

hocky2_120The Salmon River Storm hockey team was hosted by the I.Y.H.A. Pee Wee 2 team this last Saturday at The Rink in Lansing.  As with the previous six teams that faced Peewee 2, the Storm might have wished that they had stayed home.

IYHA PeeWee 2, comprised of 9 Lansing skaters under the age of 12, started off slowly in the first period.

posticon Lansing PeeWee Hockey 6-1 As Season Progresses

hocky2_120With the 2011-2012 season, the Ithaca Youth Hockey Association split up their two 12U (PeeWees) teams among Ithaca and non-Ithaca residents.  Showing the strength of youth hockey in Lansing, the PeeWee Two team was centered on nine Lansing residents with the 2nd largest contingent comprising of three skaters from Dryden.

This last weekend’s games involved the longest road trip of the season, where the PeeWee Two team made a trip to the North Country to take on the Thousand Island Pirates in the town of Clayton. Tiffany Lobdell started off the scoring with a wrist shot finding the net three minutes into the game.  Goalie Ryan Besemer held off the Pirates up until 1:30 left in the first period, when the Pirates tied the score with a roller between the pads.
