volleyball2_120The Lansing High School Varsity Volleyball Team completed their 2011 season with a 12-4 record, 11-3 in conference play. The Bobcats finished second in the IAC North Conference with rival Trumansburg finishing in 1st place. Some believed that the Bobcats could finish higher after an impressive start to the season. But it was Trumansburg that went to the final four in the State Championship Tournament with a very good team that swept their way through the IAC North only to lose in the IAC Championship to perennial powerhouse Tioga. Still, the Lansing Bobcats had their way with the balance of conference foes.

Said Coach Brenda Powers: "I am proud of the girls’ accomplishments this season. It is a group that I will never forget. They are a very close knit group."

soccer_tully_120The 2011 Lansing Bobcats soccer team overcame strong winds, some early nervous play, and some curious officiating in the first half to defeat the Tully Black Knights on Sunday afternoon at Morrisville State College. In doing so, the Bobcats moved to 20-0 on the season, captured their first Regional Championship since 2004, and advanced to the New York state, Class C semi-finals next weekend in Middletown.

Having only been behind once all season, the Bobcats nearly found their selves on the short end of a 1-0 score for the second time this year, and in fact they were, for about 5 seconds. After a dangerous cross into the Bobcats 18-yard box off a Black Knight corner, keeper Benji Parkes couldn’t control the ball cleanly and it came down right into the hands of a defenseless Sean Streb, resulting in a penalty being awarded to Tully.

soccer_20111105_120Playing and beating a rival team more than one time, in the same season is not an envious task for even the most seasoned and talented of teams. But that’s what the 2011 Lansing Boys’ Soccer team had to do last Saturday if they wanted to claim their first Sectional Championship since 2007, and keep their undefeated season alive.  Mindful of their gritty and hotly contested 1-0 victory from earlier in the season, the Bobcats knew they would have to be sharp if they were going to deny a return trip to the state tournament for the Olympians of Marathon.

soccer_f3_120It seems that not even sub 40-degree temperatures and snow flurries can slow down the 2011 Lansing Bobcats boys’ soccer team. Last Saturday night at SUNY Cortland’s Chugger Davis Stadium, the #1 ranked Bobcats continued their dominant play by steamrolling a stunned Unatego team in the Section IV Quarterfinals. With their 6-1 victory in front of a small but loyal and bundled crowd, the boys moved their season’s record to 17-0, and reinforced their Class C, #1 state ranking in the process.

Led by their dynamic scoring duo of junior Ethan Kutler and sophomore Benji Geisler, the Bobcats pelted the Unatego goal with 26 shots, 16 of them on frame, and earned 11 corner kicks. Kutler and Geisler each notched 2 goals on the night, bringing their season long point total (total goals and assists registered) beyond the 130 mark.

soccersve_1_120The Lansing boys’ soccer team was expecting a tightly played match last night for the Section IV Semi-Final game versus a game Spencer Van Etten team, so they knew they had to come out aggressive and set the tone early. What they may not have expected though, was to garner 2 quality goals in the first 6 minutes of the match.  Just 5 minutes into the first half, red-hot senior midfielder Sean Streb continued his fine play with a world-class strike from 25 yards, past a helpless Panther keeper.

The blast rattled the Lansing fans in attendance at Ithaca High School, and raised the energy levels for both teams. Just 30 seconds later, junior striker Ethan Kutler corralled the ball in the midfield, and played a magnificent through ball between 2 Panther backs to a streaking Ellington Hopkins, who calmly beat the keeper to his left with a crisp finish, putting Lansing up 2-0 and sending the partisan crowd into a frenzy.
