soccer_girls1With a line-up packed with eight Conference All-Stars, the Lady Cats won their sixth straight conference title wrapping up a 1-0 win over Waverly last saturday evening on Ithaca High's turf. In what had been an one-sided affair, leading goal scorer Shea McCartney scored her 19th of the season in the 71st minute on a feed from Joanna Barrett. Barrett made a dashing dribble run from just inside midfield and was able to find McCartney on the right side of the Waverly 18 yard box.

McCartney took two touches to outpace two defenders before slammiing the ball past the Waverly keeper Allie Frutchey and into the far upper corner. It was the only shot of 23 that evaded Frutchey who had 10 saves, including two that were sure goals punched away at the last second.

soccer_schusteriac120In 2010, Trumansburg denied the Lansing boys’ soccer team from an appearance in the IAC Large School championship game by defeating the Bobcats in a heartbreaking play in game after the rivals finished tied atop the leader board.  In 2011, the Bobcats made sure they would be playing under the lights on the 3rd Saturday in October by running the regular season table with a 15-0 record, and a #1 state ranking.

Facing a determined and aggressive squad from Southern Division champions, Elmira Notre Dame, the Bobcats were given a stern and physical test before bettering their opponents for a 1-0 victory, and earning their first IAC Title since 2009. In front of a large and excited crowd at Ithaca High School, both teams came out determined to put their stamp on the game, and although the first half finished scoreless, Lansing certainly got the better of play with several outstanding scoring chances.

After an early 4-3 lead the Bobcats went on two runs, the first a 4-0 spurt then a over powering 10-0 surge, led by the outstanding serving of Junior Jada Gooch who had  5 aces among her 6 service points. Senior Amber Howser and junior Hannah Armstrong also had strong performances as the Bobcats coasted to victory.

soccer_10dryden_warkenton_120Once again, it was a matchup of long time rivals on the pitch. Once again, it was a cool and rainy day for a grudge match. Some things don’t change. But one thing was different last Thursday at Lansing’s Sobus Field—a victory by the Bobcats over the Dryden Purple Lions would secure the #1 ranking in New York State’s Class C division. And once again, the Bobcats came out victorious with a hard fought, 4-0 margin over a very game Dryden squad, extending the Bobcats win streak over their rivals to 4 consecutive games.

The Lansing boys varsity soccer team will play for the IAC Championship on Saturday at 7:30pm at Ithaca High School.  This game will only be streamed on 1160ESPN.com (due to the world series) starting at 7:15pm.
The number 1 ranked team in New York State Class C division visited Whitney Point on a beautiful afternoon for soccer on Monday, looking to close out their regular season with an undefeated record and their top ranking intact. Flashing their “retro jerseys” and “70s” shorts, the Lansing soccer machine kept rolling by posting an 8-1 result with a well-balanced and relentless offensive attack and a solid defense.

Led by senior tri-captain Sean Streb and sophomore midfielder Benji Geisler with 3 goals apiece, and junior Ellington Hopkins’ 4 assists, the Bobcats dominated the game with 36 shots, 21 of them on frame, and forcing the Whitney Point keeper into making 14 saves.

football1It was a wet, chilly night as the Bobcats took on the Panthers last Friday night.  They had a chance to improved their record to 4 and 3 or let it drop to 3 and 4.  After the initial kickoff return of 34 yards by Gino Leonardi of Spencer- VanEtten (S-VE), Lansing's defense declawed the panthers and didn't allow them to score at all in the first quarter.  For the Bobcats first drive of the game Ryan Todd rushed for over 30 hard gained yards in five carries.  This set the tone of the game and set up Greg Lehr for a sweet 26 yard TD.  Todd tacked on two more point with conversion run up the middle.  Score, 8-0, Lansing.

The Lansing girls varsity soccer team will play for the IAC Championship on Saturday at 5:00pm at Ithaca High School.  The game will be aired on 1160 ESPN radio and streamed on 1160ESPN.com starting at 4:45pm.
It has become a familiar theme for the Lansing Girls Varsity soccer team in late-October: competing for the IAC Conference Championship. The girls will face IAC Big School South Champion Waverly tomorrow at 5pm at Ithaca High School. With a victory, it would become the programs 6th in a row and yet another sign that the talent pool at Lansing is far from drying up.

The senior led bunch finished its regular season last week with rain soaked dominant performances against local rival Dryden (4-1) and vastly improved Whitney Point (5-1). Lansing arrives at the title game with a 13-2 record with loses coming to Marathon (0-1) and Owego (1-2).

soccer_20111012_parkesSenior keeper and tri captain Benji Parkes has barely broken a sweat during the Bobcats torrid 12-0 start to the 2011 season. Having only faced a total of 4 shots all season prior to the latest Trumansburg darby, there was concern amongst the Lansing faithful about his readiness to handle big game pressure. But the big keeper put to rest any concerns by making several outstanding saves, including denying a penalty to help the Bobcats to a hard fought, 3-1 victory over their cross lake rivals last Friday afternoon in Trumansburg.

The Bobcats came out ready to play in the first half, dominating possession and creating several scoring chances by moving the ball around to all fields. Lansing couldn’t find the back of the net however, until the 25’ minute mark when junior Cobi Byrne played a perfect ball to Ellington Hopkins, who flicked the ball into the path of a cutting Ethan Kutler, who buried the ball in the back of the net for his 23rd tally on the year, and putting the Bobcats up 1-0.  The goal seemed to inspire both teams, as the energy level both on the pitch, and in the bleachers seemed to elevate.

sff_offensive_line-dryden120Saturday’s battle between the Lansing Bobcats and the Dryden Purple Lions was, in a word, a nailbiter.  The score was 30-22 with less than 2 seconds on the clock.  Dryden had possession.  The Purple Lion quarterback put one in the air - you could have heard a pin drop as the crowd held their breath and silently watched the pigskin spiral 10 yards into the end zone – and, like a heat-seeking missile, the ball hit one lone Purple Lion in a pack of Bobcat defenders.  The pass was complete.

With no time on the clock and 2 points standing between Lansing and a perfect record, would Dryden make the two-point conversion and tie the game?  Not if the Bobcat defense had anything to do with it.  After the Dryden snap, a sea of blue and gold defenders converged into a dominating goal line stop and sacked the Purple Lion quarterback.  The Lansing Bobcats won the game with a final score of 30-28.

soccer20110907McDonoughLast Friday and Saturday night was more of the same for the 2011 Lansing Bobcats Boys’ soccer team. Except for some early fall weather and a new location for a regular season game, the Bobcats continue to dismantle any team that gets in their way, easily winning both games at the Greene High School Invitational Tournament by a combined score of 16-0.

The number 5 ranked Class C team in New York State, Lansing dominated Whitney Point high school from start to finish on Friday night, winning by a lopsided 11-0.  In the championship game on Saturday night, the Bobcats faced a stiffer test in Windsor High School, prevailing 5-0 in cold and windy conditions.
