volleyball2 120The 2011 varsity volleyball team has the talent and experience that may well translate into a strong record and possible playoff run.

"The team has shown great dedication during the offseason," says Coach Brenda Powers. "Most of the girls played club ball, and they all participated in college run camps this summer. They really like each other which is an intangible that is so important. This team can go a long way if they stay committed."

football1Many months ago, if not years, Coach John Winslow started working on "the plan." Developing play books and a new logo, how to obtain safe helmets and better jerseys for his players to wear, coming up with recruiting and fundraising ideas, and a thousand other things were being put together. It seemed as if two questions came up for every answer found.

Last April, with the support of his very strong wife and his family, Winslow earned and accepted the position as The Head Coach of the Lansing Varsity Football team. Even though he is labeled as 'new', he has been coaching youth sports in Lansing for many years and has had a positive impact on countless children and adults in the Lansing community. He has voluntarily organized and managed many youth sporting camps, clinics and seasons. He has not only developed players but many coaches and parents along the way.

baseball1The Lansing boys 10U baseball team had a very successful 2011 season and came into the last game, away, against a talented Ithaca team on August 3rd.   Up to that point, the Lansing boys had a record of 12 wins, 2 losses (both losses by a margin of one run) and hoped to close out the season with a win against a tough Ithaca team.

This was the second game against Ithaca and they were looking to get even after losing at Lansing in 9 innings a few weeks before.  After trading runs in the first inning, Ithaca pulled ahead 8-6 by the third inning on some key hits, bad hops and a little help from our boys.  Then the bats went quiet and both teams posted a total of one run each in the 4th and 5th innings.

football_small120New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio announced Monday that the Senate has adopted legislation he co-sponsored to establish guidelines for coaches, teachers and other school personnel to protect our students from traumatic brain injuries.

“School athletic programs, intramural sports and physical education classes are an important part of the educational experience at every school district in our State. It is important that we make this experience as safe as possible for our student athletes and ensure that every school is prepared to treat and monitor concussions and other brain injuries,” said Nozzolio. “This legislation is critical in reducing the risk of these injuries causing long-term damage and will encourage parents, students and coaches to take preventative steps to avoid serious head injury.”

basmo0603_120After a few days rest due to what else but more rain, the Bobcats hosted Moravia as they journeyed over the hill to Lansing for a double header on one of our first beautiful and sunny 70 degree Saturdays. The Bobcats improved their record to 7-1 using a barrage of strike outs, good gloves in the field and their bats swinging well.

In the first game, Moravia came prepared to play but was not a match for the Lansing team coming off their loss and wanting the sticky mud of defeat cleansed from their cleats. Greg Lee hurled 51 pitches for 4 scoreless innings. He handed the ball off to Craig Moster to close the fifth inning with 18 pitches; four up, three down, three K's and a walk. Game over.
