ImageLansing came on strong in Groton on 10/15 and breezed through the first two sets 25-12, 25-14.  Fed by Taylor Bandler, Kristen Beyea seemed unstoppable on offense.  Lansing played a smart game, with cross-court kills into far corners, passes and tips into defensive holes.  Team play was smooth.

And then Groton woke up.  In the third set, Groton turned on the heat with aces, found gaps in Lansing’s defense, and handled Lansing’s offense with digs and blocks, pressuring the Bobcats into misplaced spikes.  Lansing fell behind by ten points, 11-21, before rallying.  Then it was Groton’s turn for errors under the barrage of Lansing’s offense, which earned a tied score at 23-23.  Three more times the score was tied before a tip by Blair Wigsten and a block by Amber Howser sealed the victory 28-26.

ImageThe Lansing Girls Varsity soccer team wrapped up its fourth straight I.A.C Division 1 title and third straight undefeated regular season recently with wins over Trumansburg (7-0), Whitney Point (8-0), Marathon (7-0) and Dryden (4-1). The team scored a whopping 123 goals while conceding just two in a season in which a lofty goal has been set.

The encounter with T'burg was vastly different than the first in which the teams went into halftime with the score tied 1-1. It was only the 4th time in the last three years that they had been played to a standstill. Tiffanie McIntosh got the scoring rolling for the Lady Cats in the 16th minute with a great individual effort. She was able to beat two defenders off the dribble and unleashed an unstoppable shot to the far corner from 16 yards out.

Image Lansing's home match against Trumansburg on 10/9 started and ended with Taylor Bandler's aces. Bandler's 10 aces and 19 assists were critical to Lansing's 3-2 win, as were Fenner's all-round contributions: 13 digs, 12 assists, six kills, and two aces. The first set was highlighted by an amazing dig and save by Nicolo Gentile, two blocks by Tory Cutting, and well-placed kills by Fenner, Cutting, Tara Miller, and Kristen Beyea. After the 25-18 win, Lansing stopped communicating, and it showed. A close loss in the second set (25-27) was followed by a ten-point deficit in the third set (15-25). One player later described the court as unnaturally quiet.' No one was talking.'

ImageDryden came to town on Thursday 10/1 ready to pay back Lansing’s earlier 3-0 win.  The Lions had a sharper warm-up than Lansing and a slight edge at the outset, though the teams traded points.  An inspiring kill by Tory Cutting brought the score to 12-14.  Then came a Lansing substitution error, a lengthy delay, and a penalty against Lansing, from which the team never recovered.  Dryden strung together aces, blocks, and kills to rack up 11 points to Lansing’s four, delivering a stunning 15-25 loss to the previously undefeated Lansing squad.

Lansing created a five-point lead early in the second set when Amber Howser added a kill to Kristin Beyea’s three aces.  Yet, the team remained off its game.  Several kills by Dryden’s Bridget Bugliari combined with Lansing errors to give Dryden the advantage as the score hit double digits.  Dryden held a two- to three- point lead until kills by Tara Miller, Breanna Brann, and a Miller ace tied up the score again 20-20.  However, Lansing then gave away four critical points, suffering a second loss 22-25.
