xc1001_sixgirls.jpgxc1001_sixgirls.jpgThe past week has been filled with acts of sportsmanship and achievements that were not only recognized by our own local papers, but also by national news. The  now well known photo of the girls cross country team holding hands at the finish (left) was acknowledged by NBC  correspondent Keith Olberman on Sunday Night Football and on his show Countdown.

A huge accomplishment that was overshadowed at this same meet was the outstanding finish by Jon Cleveland who set a record and came in over 40 seconds ahead of the next runner.  Cleveland continued his success at Saturday’s McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. This race is one of the largest in the northeast and plays host to over 250 schools from PA to Ontario and 25 separate races.  In a field of 128 runners, Cleveland place 11th (16:20) followed by teammate Josh Barber (16:21).

ImageThe 2nd ranked Lady Cats racked up another four conference wins in girls soccer action as the regular season begins to wind down. The defending Section IV champs in wins over Whitney Point (10-0), Union Springs (10-0), Southern Cayuga (10-0) and Groton (11-0) surrendered only four shots as they are as stingy on defense as they are ruthless on the attack. Technical and tactical sharpness has been the emphasis as the team prepares for what it hopes to be a sustained level of efficiency and confidence as the playoffs are mere weeks away.

posticon Sportswomanship and Win for Lansing Cross Country at Waverly

Image : The spectators at this week's cross country meet in Waverly were witness to something very special. It was the kind of sportsmanship, or in this case sportswoman ship, that you don't always see. In the Varsity girls race three runners from Lansing and three runners from Trumansburg were confused by the new course and markings which added almost a extra mile to their run. These six young women made it to the end of the race in a pack.

Despite the cheers from the crowd for a sprint to the finish, they instead decided to take each other's hand and finish the race together crossing the finish line at the same time. After they crossed the finish line they lined up in the order they went off the trail. It was truly a site to behold. The three young ladies from Lansing included Shanna Swanson, Chloe Ryan and Kathryn Shaw; and from Trumansburg Brianna VanSoest, Danielle Peck, and Chelsea Starkweather. In the end the Lansing girls placed 3rd behind 1st place Trumansburg and 2nd place Waverly; however, they have a memory that will end long after the score has been forgotten. Also running strong for the girls were Casey Phlegar and Emily Rasmussen.

ImageAfter wins against Watkins Glen on September 9th and Odessa Montour on the 17th, the Lansing Girls Swimming & Diving Team scored another win in a home meet against Dryden Monday.  The 117-66 win marked coach Diane Hicks-Hughes' 300th victory as Lansing's varsity swimming and diving coach.  The team is undefeated for the season so far.

This came on the heels of the September 17th meet when Lansing beat Odessa Montour 99.5 to 62.5.  In that meet Anna Conte won the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.58, but Lansing swam exhibition so it wasn't counted for points.  The 400 Free Relay team from Lansing also swam exhibition but swam a 4:08.27.  Kali Dean, Kelsy Quigley, Erin Trowbridge and Ashley McDonald.  Kali Dean swam the state qualifying time in the 50 free with the lead off leg in the 200 Free Relay of 24.98.

posticon Kite Surfers Jump Cayuga

ImageLast Friday was a particularly windy day on Myers Point.  As the northern wind picked up cars pulled onto the point and people in wet suits and body harnesses began inflating what looked like giant wings.  Pretty soon there were several kite surfers in the water along with sail boats and windsurfers.  While the sailors and windsurfers were challenged that afternoon, the kite surfers dominated Cayuga Lake, speeding across the lake and jumping -- or being pulled -- into the air.

"It's a hard sport to learn," Karl Gesslein says.  "It's nearly impossible to get your fix here.  You have to go some place windy like Hatteras."

ImageThe Lansing Bobcat Football team got back on the winning track with an impressive win against arch rival Trumansburg in the first annual “Battle for the Paddle,” scoring a 28-14 victory.  Jake Whiting led the way offensively carrying the ball 22 times for 160 yards.  The Bobcats had a season high 322 yards rushing on the night.

The Bobcats got on the board early in the game on a 19 yard scoring run by Jon Glennon to grab a 7-0 lead after the successful point-after-try by Ryan Todd.  Less than six minutes later, still in the first quarter, the Bobcats scored again on a Colden Knapp two yard run—the point after failed and the Bobcats had a 13-0 lead.  Things got interesting just before the half when Trumansburgs’ Matt King scored on a 56 yard run tightening the game up at 13-7.

A scrappy and persistent Groton team faced sluggish Bobcats on their home court on Friday 9/18.   After Lansing won a lackluster first set 25-17, service dominated the night, with both teams weak on defense.  In the second set, Lansing’s 12 aces accelerated its 25-5 win.  However, Groton rallied in the third set, with five aces and a lead through the halfway point.

In the Trumansburg game Lansing came out with a strong first half.  Fernando Nunez scored on a follow-up goal 2 minutes into the game.  Senior Captain Joe Skeps fired a shot from the left side and caromed off the post to Nunez who put it in.  Skeps was more then involved in the second goal as well.  He took a 20 yard restart and drove it home on a hard driven shot.

ImageThe Girls Varsity Soccer Team was at its potent best again in victories over IAC rivals Marathon and Dryden. The Lady Cats defeated the defending Class "C" Co-State Champs Marathon by a score of 3-0 last friday afternoon at Sobus Field. Senior Ellyn Grant-Keane scored the games first goal on an assist from junior Kathryn Hornibrook in the 29th minute.

After some precise neat passing at the top of Marathons penalty box, Hornibrook released Grant-Keane to her left who then proceded to score over the Marathon goalkeepers right shoulder. Lansing continued to apply pressure with no second goal coming in the half.

ImageComing off a weekend tournament win over Ithaca, Lansing remains undefeated in IAC play, with 3-0 wins over Whitney Point and Dryden, the reigning IAC volleyball champions.

At Dryden on 9/16, Lansing pulled ahead in the first set to a 20-13 lead but then gave Dryden eight points and a two-point advantage 23-21 through a string of errors.  A well-placed push by Kari Fenner and a tenacious dig by Niki Gain reestablished Lansing’s confidence, and the Bobcats won 25-23 on a Fenner kill and a Dryden error.
