xc1001_sixgirls.jpgThe past week has been filled with acts of sportsmanship and achievements that were not only recognized by our own local papers, but also by national news. The now well known photo of the girls cross country team holding hands at the finish (left) was acknowledged by NBC correspondent Keith Olberman on Sunday Night Football and on his show Countdown.A huge accomplishment that was overshadowed at this same meet was the outstanding finish by Jon Cleveland who set a record and came in over 40 seconds ahead of the next runner. Cleveland continued his success at Saturday’s McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. This race is one of the largest in the northeast and plays host to over 250 schools from PA to Ontario and 25 separate races. In a field of 128 runners, Cleveland place 11th (16:20) followed by teammate Josh Barber (16:21).

The 2nd ranked Lady Cats racked up another four conference wins in girls soccer action as the regular season begins to wind down. The defending Section IV champs in wins over Whitney Point (10-0), Union Springs (10-0), Southern Cayuga (10-0) and Groton (11-0) surrendered only four shots as they are as stingy on defense as they are ruthless on the attack. Technical and tactical sharpness has been the emphasis as the team prepares for what it hopes to be a sustained level of efficiency and confidence as the playoffs are mere weeks away.
: The spectators at this week's cross country meet in Waverly were witness to something very special. It was the kind of sportsmanship, or in this case sportswoman ship, that you don't always see. In the Varsity girls race three runners from Lansing and three runners from Trumansburg were confused by the new course and markings which added almost a extra mile to their run. These six young women made it to the end of the race in a pack.
Lansing Modified Football kicked off their season opener with a winning scrimmage game at home against Groton on September 14, 2009. (42-21) Just one week later they won their first official game of the season by traveling to Seneca Falls to play Mynderse on September 19, 2009. (6-32) The following game against South Seneca, September 24, 2009, was canceled and the reschedule has yet to be determined.
Lansing beat Waverly 110 to 60 in an away meet September 23rd.
After wins against Watkins Glen on September 9th and Odessa Montour on the 17th, the Lansing Girls Swimming & Diving Team scored another win in a home meet against Dryden Monday. The 117-66 win marked coach Diane Hicks-Hughes' 300th victory as Lansing's varsity swimming and diving coach. The team is undefeated for the season so far.
Last Friday was a particularly windy day on Myers Point. As the northern wind picked up cars pulled onto the point and people in wet suits and body harnesses began inflating what looked like giant wings. Pretty soon there were several kite surfers in the water along with sail boats and windsurfers. While the sailors and windsurfers were challenged that afternoon, the kite surfers dominated Cayuga Lake, speeding across the lake and jumping -- or being pulled -- into the air.
