Cretney to Craig Esposito.

Lansing hopes to bounce back and have refocused their efforts this week against arch rival Trumansburg on Friday night.  The game features the first annual "Battle for the Paddle," in which the winning team can claim not only bragging rights for the year, but also claim a commemorative paddle which will be put on display at the winning school.

ImageITHACA, NY—The Ithaca SufferJets fought hard for the fourth win of five games so far this season on Saturday night at Cass Park Rink. The final deciding point was earned in the last seconds of the game when SufferJets Pivot, Cam Arrow, lent a classic arm whip to jammer Sarabellum, pulling her though the pack for a win of 131 to 130.

At the end of the first period the Ithaca SufferJets left for the locker room down by 15 points, with a score of 62-77.  Plagued by a series of jammers in the penalty box the SufferJets worked hard to keep the point spread from advancing but couldn’t stem several power jams that kept the Dollies scoring while the SufferJets jammer sat in the box.

ImageTrumansburg and Lansing's varsity football teams have always been worthy rivals.  But when they clash at this year's game there will be more at stake in the first annual Battle For The Paddle.  The winner of the September 18th game at Trumansburg's Tarbell Field will get to display the brand new custom-made paddle and will have bragging rights for a year until next year's game.

"It's already found a home in our trophy case," says Lansing Athletic Director John Taylor.

"When we win it, please come by and check it out," retorts Trumansburg's Atletic Director Matt Taves.  "When you first come in, just to the right will be the trophies for that year's athletics.  That's where the paddle will have it's home."

"So that will be the empty spot," Taylor replies.

ImageLansing dominated its first game of the season, 25-9, after solid serving by seniors Kristen Beyea and Nicolo Gentile reversed an early Moravia lead on September 3rd.  The Bobcats’ decisive five- and 11-point runs were punctuated by the first three of junior Tara Miller’s four kills.

Teamwork picked up as the match progressed, though several dropped balls showed the new line-up is still working out its kinks.  Lansing sustained its lead throughout game two and faltered only briefly in game three, winning 25-14 and 25-16.  Senior Taylor Bandler contributed three aces and four assists, Sunah Bong several digs, and Beyea three kills and a block.

ImageThe Lansing Bobcats got off to a good start with a win over the always tough Candor Indians last Friday night, scoring a 16-14 Victory.  The Bobcats jumped out to a 16-0 lead after fumbling the opening kickoff and threatened to go up by another touchdown before the half when J.D. McKane picked off a pass and returned it deep into Candor territory.  Unfortunately the Bobcats were unable to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs.

The first touchdown of the year for Lansing was scored by Colden Knapp on a five yard run in the first quarter, giving the Bobcats a 7-0 lead after the successful point after try by Ryan Todd.  Early in the second quarter the Bobcat defense forced Candor to punt from deep in its' own territory and the snap from center ended up sailing into the endzone where the Indians punter alertly kicked it out of bounds for a safety, giving the Bobcats a 9-0 lead.

Lansing Athletic Director John Taylor
School officially starts next week, but students have been back already to practice for the fall athletics season.  Some of the teams have already competed in pre-season games, and the season promises to be competitive according to Lansing Athletic Director John Taylor.  The fall varsity season includes football, girls soccer, boys soccer, volleyball, girls swimming and diving, and cross country.

"This is a community of people who really love their sports and want to have they best they possibly can out on the competition fields," Taylor says.  "I'm happy with that.  The girls soccer team wanted to have a bus to go to one of the State inter-sectional games last year.  Within one hour we had enough funding for a bus.  People are willing to help out.  It's just phenomenal."
