posticon Three Big Wins For Lansing Swimmers

ImageThis was a big week for Lansing's varsity Girls Swim Team.  The team won three meets, taking the top score against Odessa on the 18th, the Jack Thomas Invitational Friday and Saturday, plus a Tuesday meet against Dryden. 

Lansing scored highest in Class C in the Jack Thomas Invitational with 335 points.  Dryden came in second at 223.  "Kali Dean from Lansing was selected the most outstanding swimmer of the meet," says coach Diane Hicks-Hughes.  "She won the 50 free, 100 free with a new invitational record, a member of the 400 Free Relay that took 1st place and placed 5th in the Medley Relay.  Kali also set NYSPHSAA qualifying times in both the 50 and 100 free."

posticon Lansing Football Pummels Oxford 28-12

ImageThe Lansing Varsity Football team notched another win this week knocking off Oxford 28-12.  The ground attack was led by Jacob Whiting with 16 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown and Colden Knapp who had 9 carries for 45 yards.  T.J. Cretney led the air attack completing 6 passes for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Jon Glennon and Justin Payne were the recipients of the touchdown passes.  Payne had a solid all-around night also returning a recovered lateral (which had been batted down by Glennon) 23 yards for a touchdown and going a perfect 4 for 4 on extra points.  Matt Hartz and David Bandler anchored a solid night by the offensive line allowing the Bobcats time to pass when needed and opening holes for Whiting and Knapp in the ground game.

Personal bests were more common than not as the Cross Country team took on TAE, Southern Springs, and Trumansburg on Tuesday  Watkins Glen State Park . The competition of many other talented athletes pushed Lansing to the top. Juniors Jon Cleveland (17:51) and Josh Barber (17:59) crushed their previous best times coming in 1st and 2nd in a field of 50+ athletes.

posticon Lansing's New Athletic Director, John Taylor: Part 2

ImageJohn Taylor agreed to an exclusive interview with the Lansing Star two weeks ago, on his fourth day at Lansing High School.  He was just getting his feet on the ground in his new position as Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, and Director of Physical Education.  In last week's installment he spoke about his background and training as a coach, physical education teacher, and administrator.

This week we cover his philosphy of sports and education, lifelong sports and recreation, and what he thinks about Lansing's program and facilities.

posticon Girls Swimming is Number One

Lansing girls took first place in a meet against Waverly Tuesday, 97-73.  Lansing swimmers took first place in eight of eleven events.  Kali Dean , Anna Mapes, Alex Conte, and Ashley McDonald came in first in the 200 Medley Relay.  In the 200 Free Kali Dean sped to first place in 2:02.74.  Waverly took first in the 200 IM, but in the 50 Free Lansing was back when Ashley McDonald finished first in 26.16.

Courtney Pollack took the top spot in the 100 Fly when she sped to the finish in 1:09.40.  In the next event Anna Mapes came in first, completing the 100 Free in 1:03.92.  The 500 Free went to Lansing as well when Alex Conte took the first place  time of 5:54.13.  Erin Trowbridge, Chelsea Tucker, Courtney Pollack, and Katrina Mehringer were the top scorers in the 200 Free Relay.  Waverly won first in the 100 Back and 400 Free Relay events, and Lansing's Kali Dean finished first in 1:16.34 in the 100 Breast.

posticon Lansing Cross Country Rising to the Top

The boys cross country team walked away with first place in their division at the Elmira Invitational on Saturday, September 13th.  Elmira hosted over 20 teams from central New York. Lansing ran their varsity team with only 6 runners and still managed to win with a team total of 143 points.

posticon Lansing Football One and One

ImageThe Lansing Varsity Football Team is off to a one and one start this season splitting two nail-biting contests.  Lansing lost its opener to Class B Dryden 23-20.  Trailing 17-7 at the half Lansing stormed back to take a 20-17 lead on touchdowns by Colden Knapp and Jake Whiting in the third quarter.  Dryden scored on a 45 yard touchdown run by Derek White with 4:11 remaining to end the scoring for the night.  Justin Payne scored Lansing's first touchdown of the game and the year on a beautiful  40 yard pass from T.J. Cretney.  Whiting led the Bobcats rushing attack with 92 yards on twenty carries.

posticon Lansing's New Athletic Director, John Taylor: Part 1

ImageJohn Taylor started at Lansing High School as Assistant Principal, Director of Physical Education, and Athletic Director on September 2.  He sat down with the Lansing Star the next Friday to talk about the position, his past, and expectations for the future. 

Taylor is soft spoken, engaged, and has a sense of humor.  He lives in Binghamton with his wife Elaine.  He has two step daughters.  Megan, 21, goes to The College of Saint Rose in Albany.  Laura, 18, is a senior at Chenango Valley High School.

In this week's issue Taylor talks about his background and training.  Next week he talks about Lansing, the future, and a bit about his philosophy of sports and learning, and expectations for the future.

posticon Boys and Girls Cross Country Score at the Top

The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are looking strong at the start of the 2008 season. The boys team took first place on Tuesday at Candor against SVE, Groton, and Watkins Glen.  Jon Cleveland finished second (18:43) and co-caption Josh Barber finished fourth (19:05).

Completing the top five scoring athletes were co-caption Luke Davis (20:16), George Wigsten (20:42) and Tim Shea (20:47). Junior Dan Comisi improved his time by over four minutes to finish in 20:57. Shanna Swanson placed third for the girls with a time of 24:59, improving from last year and newcomer Neila Thomas finished with a time of 28:16.

posticon Wells Women Shutout By Pitt Bradford

Aurora, New York –The University of Pittsburg Bradford defense was too much for the Express as they defeated the Wells College Women’s Soccer Team 2-0 today at Wells.  Senior Claire Petersen (Derby, NY) finished the day with eight saves for Wells.

Bradford finished the day with 18-shots on goal and rarely left the offensive zone of the Express. The Panthers got the scoring started on a penalty kick goal by Michelle Centola (Rochester, NY) to give them a quick 1-0 lead. The Panthers found the back of the net again just three minutes into the second half on a goal by Lindsay Sherman (Bradford, PA) to give them a 2-0 lead. The Panthers defense buckled down and held the Express offense to just two shots on net.

posticon Wells Field Hockey Suffers First Loss

Aurora, New York –The Wells College Field Hockey Team (3-1) saw too many opportunities slip away Wednesday, including a victory, as Keystone College handed the Express their first loss of the season 2-1 in overtime today at Wells. Liz Barclay (Cherry Hill, NJ) had the lone goal for Wells while goalie Beth Cereo (Port Biron, NY) finished with 12 saves.

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, Keystone got the scoring started with a goal by Brackney Brotsman (Brackney, PA) to give Keystone a 1-0 lead. The lead would be short lived as Barclay would push across a pass from Paige Corneby (Barton, NY) to tie the game at one. The game would head to overtime where Kellina Yerrish (Honesdale, PA) would score on a corner from Kellie Sussman (Springville, PA) with less than four-minutes left in the first overtime to give Keystone the 2-1 Victory.

Final Score: Wells  3, Morrisiville 1

Aurora, New York – Freshmen Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont) had a goal and an assist, and senior Amanda  Heterbring (Java Center) added a goal of her own as the Wells College Women’s Soccer Team (1-0-0) rolled over Morrisville State College (0-1-0) 3-1 on Saturday at Wells. Junior Elizabeth Fish (West Winfield) scored the lone goal for Morrisville.

Morrisville got the scoring started early when Fish scored on a cross from sophomore Caitlyn Campbell (Westmoreland) 16-minutes into the game. That would end up being the only goal for Morrisville as the Wells defense held down Morrisville allowing just two shots on goal.

The Potsdam Men’s soccer team played to a tough 1-1 tie with Wells College in a very physical game between the two teams in the first game on Day 2 of the Potsdam Bears Classic.

James Edsall scored Potsdam’s only goal at the 79:48 mark and was assisted by Mark McCloskey.  Corey Fischer from Wells tied the game at 86:14. The Bears outshot Wells 16-4 in the game.
