ImageThe Lansing varsity tennis team lost 7 senior players from last year so this will be a pretty inexperienced squad. The team has been practicing outside in the cold for only 2 weeks. Tuesday Lansing lost a very close match at Waverly 3-4.

Winning matches for Lansing were #3 Singles Dan Zarate and #4 Jesse Ingall and the #3 doubles team of Jonathon Sun and Keenan Hughes who are 7th and 8th graders with potential to help the team succeed. Dealing with nerves was Tomas Bobovsky, exchange student from Slovokia who was Lansing's #1 singles player.

Numbers are not an issue this year with Lansing Track and Field.  Both squads boast a high volume of kids, eager to return to action or get started on a promising track and field career.

Indoor track took a major step towards Outdoor success under Scheffler and Ames this winter, with Scheffler coaching the sprints/jumps and Ames, Middle Distance and Distance.  Sending 12 kids to states was a remarkable feat in it self.  We broke a 10 year old Section 4 record in the 4 x 200m girls relay (Chloe Ryan, Lindsey Petry, Anna Mapes, Kathryn Hornibrook) and placed 6th overall in the state up against mostly NYC schools.  The Boys 4 x 800m Relay team of Eddy Potter, Josh Barber, Walker Diebolt and Henry Potter, pulled a major upset over perennial powerhouse Corning to move onto the state meet, cruising to victory by over 20 seconds!  We were doubted all season, but showed up when it counted.

This year Daylights Savings time not only made us 'spring ahead' one hour with our clocks, but it also heralded in the spring athletics season at Lansing High School.  Athletic Director Ed Redmond says that coming off of a great winter season he is optimistic that the spring teams will continue the momentum.  "Great kids, good coaching, community support," Redmond says.  "It was a fun season.  Kids are having successes on and off the playing fields.  We're expecting another good season.  Numbers are high again.  We have good participation, which is always a goal of mine."

Only a few days into the season, Redmond says he already likes the earlier switch to Daylight Savings.  "I like the early Daylight Savings time," he says.  "The days are longer.  It seems to perk the kids up a little bit.  The more daylight you get, the more the kids' mindset goes toward Spring."

Emily O'BrienEmily O'BrienWhile some teenagers and kids are home watching TV, playing video games or being couch potatoes, other kids and teens are at the swimming pool.  This is the case for Lansing's Emily O'Brien (age 14). Emily has been named the LCATS Swim Club's 'Spotlight Swimmer' by the coaches of the LCATS Swim Club.

At a recent swim meet in Albany (Region 1), Emily recorded a blistering time of 59.57 in the 100 butterfly event.   Her previous personal-best time was 1:00.22. According to Coach Reed Dewey, "Emily's time is huge.  She now has a 'AAAA time' which means she is one of the fastest 14-year-old girls doing the butterfly in the country!"

In another event, the 50 freestyle, Emily tied another swimmer with the time of 25.92.  She then had to do a 'swim off' to determine which swimmer could advance to the finals.  This was the first time she has experienced this in competition.   When asked about this, Emily said, "I thought it was exciting because it meant that I had another chance to get into the finals."  She won the swim off with a time of 25.41.   Her time in the finals was 25.73.   Emily's previous best time was a 26.47 in the 50 freestyle.
