Last week the Scholastic Boys Central Soccer Team lost in the Bronz medal match to Western 5-1.
During the week the boys became a team and improved in all aspects of the game. On Thursday the boys lost to Western 5-1 The game was much closer than the score as the score was tied by Sidney's Mike Guerriere with 28 minutes left in the game. Three minutes later Central had a chance to go up 2-1 but the Western keeper came through. Western scored with under 20 to go up 2-1 and again Central had a golden opportunity to tie the game but the Keeper for Western was again in the way- western went on to score 3 more in the final 10 minutes.

This Monday will begin a week of activity in the Lansing high school and middle school gymnasiums, as Lansing Recreation Department's sixth annual basketball camp begins. The camp will teach 4th through 9th graders the fundamentals of basketball in a positive atmosphere. "It's a great camp," says camp director Adam Heck. "They get a shirt, they get a ball, and it's a whole week of basketball. We're trying to get as many kids interested in basketball as possible."
Heck, who coaches Lansing's Boys Varsity Basketball, works at many basketball camps around the northeast. He has worked for 13 years at Pensylvannia's Frostburg State University basketball camp, which typically attracts 600 campers, as well as Cortland State's camp, among others. "I've learned from those guys how to run camps," he says. "We're always looking for more kids. We'll even take kids into camp who walk in. It's not expensive, we're not about making a lot of money. We're trying to promote basketball."

One of New York's biggest sporting events of the year is coming up at the end of this month when the 2007 Empire State Games are held in Westchester County July 25th through 29th. Lansing's Adam Heck is coaching the Scholastic Central boys team for the second year in a row along with Groton's John D'Antonio. The Central region team is recruited from Syracuse, Watertown, Utica, Oneonta, Cortland, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira. "It's a huge area, and we take the top 20 kids," says Heck. "From there 16 get to go to the game, and Walker Diebolt is one of the 16. Dan Hranek, a Lansing Senior, is an alternate. It is certainly a great honor for our local kids."
Players were chosen by Heck, D'Antonio, and coaches throughout the region in four tryouts at Colgate University in Halmilton, one in Binghamton, one at Syracuse, and one at Ithaca. The tryouts are spread throughout the region to make it easier for players to attend. They can try out as many times as they want, and the top 30 to 40 are called back to a final tryout at Cortland State.

Archers from all over the state came to Lansing Sunday for the first of LBH Archery Club's three summer 3D Shoots. By mid-morning shooters of all ages from Lansing, Binghamton, Bainbridge, Whitney Point, Lansing, Moravia, Pompeii, Auburn, and Weedsport had registered for the course. "Each time we put a course up it's a different course," explains club President John Huether. "We never put the targets in the same place. It's always something different. That's good practice for archers. It provides a little competition."
