Last summer members of the Ithaca High School Class of '61 gathered to celebrate their 55th reunion. When registering for the weekend, they were asked to consider giving to IPEI. Enough was donated to fund three Red and Gold Grants this year that directly impact Ithaca High: '100th Anniversary of I.H.S. Band Commissioned Composition', 'Changing Graphs and Shapes from 2D Paper into 3D Space in Geometry and Calculus', and 'An Exploration of Medieval Treasures and the Role of the Hero- Viewing WWI through Art'.

The members of the class "were delighted to learn of IPEI and its projects. Who doesn't like to know their donations are used for special educational projects which benefit the current IHS students?!" according to Loulie Kent, Class of '61 Reunion Committee member.

Kent reflected on why they chose to raise funds to benefit their alma mater.

"Many of our classmates ended up teaching in one form or another which increases our appreciation for the fine education we received," he said. "The gifts made were expressions of gratitude to our IHS teachers who inspired such important and rewarding work after graduation. The class' gift to IPEI is another way of 'paying it forward' and honoring our teachers and school."

IPEI Executive Director Steven Manley stated, "The Class of '61 has made this gift to support the innovative teachers at their alma mater, IHS. As the head of IPEI, I'm excited to provide a way for Ithaca's alumni to support their high school, and stay connected with the local community. "

"We hope more IHS alumni classes will follow the Class of '61's generous lead of paying tribute to their experience through a gift to IPEI. Making a contribution to IPEI helps enrich the experiences of the next generation," expressed Holly Heitzman, IPEI Board member and Development Committee chair.
