What do Girl Scouts do each year that parallels Boy Scouts' Pinewood Derby?

Girl Scouts of the Ithaca Lansing Service Unit annually gather for Thinking Day. Thinking Day is when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world 'think' about each other and how they are connected in the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides (US scouts wear both pins---WAGGS and their Girl Scout member pin!). The international date is Feb. 22 but locally the event is scheduled based on Feb. school vacation dates in order to have full participation of scouts of all levels and communities.

Miriam Leo and Lauren Rice of Junior Troop 693 dressed in native clothing of India. At Thinking Day each troop selects a country and works for several meetings to create a table demonstration for the event which is set up like a fair with tables around the room for girls to visit and learn. They do 'research' in an age appropriate way and then plan and produce the activity station/table. In addition to displays and hands on activities, food or drink from the country's culture are offered.

Girls who 'travel' the world by visiting the tables carry a passport for the night and get 'stamped' at each country.

It's a colorful and active event that could make great photos. Scout parents sign photo permission slips although if you want their name with the image, you will need to ask at the point of photograph, or contact me later and we can try to make an identification.
