The weather couldn't dampen the spirits of the Lansing Lion's Club, which turned out at Myers Park for their annual 4th of July Barbecue.  While the rain kept some people away, many lined up to get take-out, or to eat in Myers Park under a tent set up for the occasion.  The cake wheel was popular despite the rain, earning $800 for the day.  And while umbrellas were standard fare, no one seemed particularly bothered by the rain.

The picnic is held every year at Myers Park, with hundreds of chickens marinated in Bob Baker's Cornell Sauce, then barbecued on an enormous grill.  Large cans of potatoes and beans, drinks and cookies were stocked for the meal.  Visitors lined up to buy meals, then went through the line in the park pavilion.

American flags lined Ridge Road Wednesday to celebrate Independence Day.  Flags are provided each year by the Lansing Lion's Club and Lansing Boy Scouts.
{/styleboxjp}The Lansing Historical Association had a tent set up where they had displays as well as many books about Lansing history for sale.  A picture display of a recent field trip to Wayne Myer's gardens in Spencer showed highlights of the trip, including rare fossils on display there.  But the focus was on Lansing with three new books among the many available.

The cub scouts also had a tent where they were recruiting new members while celebrating the holiday.  Vendors had tents and booths in another pavilion, where antiques and collectibles were on display.

The 4th of July Barbecue is only one of the many fund raising events the Lions conduct.  The money goes to a huge list of projects, including scholarshiops for graduating Lansing seniors, a speech and hearing clinic, sponsorship of Lansing's Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, an eyeglasses program, and many other causes.

The club also has a history of donating structures to the Town of Lansing going back more than 50 years.  ImageThey gave the Town the Community Center and several of the pavilions at Myers Park.  Their latest structure is a band stand which volunteers are currently erecting at Myers.  They plan to have it ready for some of the later concerts in the park this summer, as well as the Lansing Harbor Festival, which hopes to make extensive use of it with entertainment scheduled throughout the day.  While most of the money for the band stand has been raised, Andy Sciarabba has pledged $2,500 in matching funds to cover the rest of it.  The club is asking for donations to raise the final amount.

The club will be selling donuts, hot dogs, burgers, soda, and hot sausage at the upcoming Town auction, and hopes to raise more money for the band stand there as well.
