apple_200On Wednesday, November 17th, Cayuga Radio Group honored a group of local teachers at the 20th Annual Apple for the Teacher Awards Banquet. The 2010 Apple for the Teacher Award winners include: Chris Bell (Fall Creek Elementary School), MaryTerese Pasquale Bowen (Ithaca High School), Beth Carsello (McGraw Elementary School), Suzanne Foote (East Ithaca Preschool), Maria Greenfield (Homer Intermediate School), Gail O'Donnell(Appleby Elementary School), Diane Pamel (Southworth Library), Trudy Parmarter (Nathan T Hall Elementary School), Mr. William Perks III (Marathon Junior-Senior High School), Melody Riker (TST BOCES), Elizabeth Spencer (Parker Elementary School), and David Syracuse (Groton High School).

Cayuga Radio Group symbolically "kicks" off the Program each fall by delivering an apple to every public school teacher in Tompkins and Cortland Counties. That's over 4,000 apples, compliments of Cornell Orchards. The seven Cayuga Radio Group stations (NewsTalk 870 WHCU, Lite Rock 97.3, Q-Country 103.7, Classic Rock I-100, HITS 103.3, 98.7 The Vine, and Progressive Talk 1470 WNYY ) ask listeners to submit nominations as to why a certain teacher deserves the Apple for the Teacher Award. A panel of judges from Cayuga Radio Group chooses two award recipients each week for 6 weeks. Giving credit to the Teachers and Nominators, the letters are read on the air throughout October and early November.

On November 17th, the Cayuga Radio Group Staff, sponsors, nominators, and teachers gathered at Celebrations for the Apple for the Teacher Awards Banquet, where the teachers receive their awards. The names of all of the Teachers are put into a drawing, and one name is picked to win the grand prize of a brand new laptop, as well as a new computer for their school, courtesy of Black Box Computer Consulting.
