 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I am desperate. I need some suggestions for Christmas gifts. Yes, I know it’s just a few days before the holiday, but I have to get something for my wife and her mother. My initial instinct is to give them gift certificates to the stores they like. Is that okay? Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Michael

Dear Michael,

If I were you, I’d get out to the stores and begin to look for something that can be wrapped, placed under the tree, and opened by your wife and your mother. Cordless power tools and appliances should not enter into the picture, unless, your wife and mother-in-law enjoy home repair projects. If you merely get them gift certificates, they will know you went out on December 24, plopped down your money on the counter, and placed them in the ugly envelope provided by the store. Your actions will broadcast a clear message: Christmas shopping is a pain, boring, and I missed my favorite reruns of “Sanford and Son” because of this stupid gift giving non-sense.

The custom of gift giving has great meaning. The entire season of Christmas is based upon the story of a Divine Being, sending down his only Son as a gift to the world that He might save the human race from eternal damnation and reruns of “Sanford and Son.” Gift giving is an act of generosity, good will, and a sign of gratitude to someone special in your life.

The gift you choose for your wife and her mother should somehow say to them “You are special, you are important, and you deserve the very best.” Ask the sales lady behind the counter what she would like her husband or boyfriend to surprise her with on Christmas day. Take notice of what cologne or perfume they wear and buy some. After you have a few presents in hand, then you may search out the “gift certificates” and include them in your expression of love and gratitude. You will know how well you did by the hugs and kisses you get from them when they see you invested some time and thought on their gifts.

Merry Christmas.
