tops120Williamsville, NY – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, today announced that through customer support, $19,469 has been donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier as a result of the annual “Check Out Hunger” fundraising campaign.  Annually, Tops runs a two-week campaign where customers are asked to donate $2, $3, or $5 at check out, with proceeds benefitting the Food Bank. Shoppers simply have the cashier scan the coupon in the amount they choose and the donation appears on their shopping receipt.

“We are proud to be a Southern Tier neighbor and are grateful of the contributions of our customers that give us the ability to make a substantial donation to the Food Bank,” said Kathleen Allen, Tops manager of community relations.

Tops’ continued support of the Check Out Hunger campaign is greatly appreciated!” said Natasha Colemman, Food Bank of the Southern Tier President and CEO. “Each $5.00 donation received enables the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to acquire and distribute over $27.00 worth of food to our network of more than 160 hunger-relief member agencies. Agencies like food pantries and soup kitchens, are serving more than 11,000 people each week across the six counties of Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins,” added Coleman.

Tops participated in the national “Check Out Hunger” campaign from January 22 to February 11. Customers who contributed to the campaign were automatically entered to win a 3 minute shopping spree.  Annually, Tops donates more than $5 million in cash and reclaimed food to regional food banks within its marketing area.
