takeyourpick 120If you like to buy locally produced fruits and vegetables, Linda VanApeldoorn wants to add another homegrown staple to your table: fresh flowers cultivated from her half-acre garden in Lansing.

VanApeldoorn, who calls herself a "farmer florist," owns Take Your Pick Flower Farm on Brickyard Rd, the only u-pick flower farm in Tompkins County. She is also a vocal proponent of the "field-to-vase" or "slow-flower" movement, which advocates the use of locally and sustainably grown flowers.

"Most of the flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from factory farms in Ecuador and Columbia," VanApeldoorn says. "When you think of flowers, you think beauty and romance. Our flowers have that fresh-picked look and scent, because they are freshly cut from our gardens."

posticon What is Cyber Security and How Does It Affect You?

internetEach day before leaving our homes, we protect the property within. By locking our doors, closing our windows, or activating our security systems, we go to great lengths to ensure that our homes have the necessary safeguards in place to thwart potential intruders and those who may try to steal our personal and precious belongings.

When it comes to our confidential personal information, however, many of us fail to realize that this information is readily available and able to be hacked at a moment's notice. Just like the locks on our homes protect the very livelihood we hold dear, we must take decisive action to protect ourselves and our personal information from the burdensome ramifications of a cyber attack. Although many of us are aware of the dangers that could result from sharing information with others, we often lack the knowledge that we need to protect ourselves and our families.

drivewaypavingscambbbBuffalo, NY (June 24, 2015)—Over the last month, Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Upstate New York received 30,419 (a 57% increase from last year at this time) inquiries regarding general contractors, roofing, paving and remodeling services. BBB is warning people to be on alert for paving and roofing ploys along with other door-to-door 'deals.' If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

This is the time of year when BBB gets reports that scammers are going door-to-door with "limited time discount offers." They may offer a deal to pave the driveway today, with "asphalt left over from a job in the neighborhood" at a cut-rate price. Or, someone may knock on your door and say they see a need for exterior repairs and offer to help. These business operators may be unlicensed, unskilled, uninsured or simply out to make a quick buck and quickly disappear.

Day said the business would do Repair/Paint-Body Work, and display one vehicle for resale.  He asked the Board whether it would like to review the site plan for the new business before approving it.  He suggested asking the business owner to come before the board, which will give it a chance to place conditions on the proposal.

albany3 120New York's Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs) provided $660 million in net tax exemptions in 2013, up $105 million from 2012 but estimated job gains were nearly 23,000 lower than the previous year, according to a report issued today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. This is DiNapoli's eighth annual report examining the performance of the state's IDAs and how these entities fulfill their mission to attract, retain and expand business within their communities.

"Although the amount of tax breaks IDAs provided to private companies noticeably increased, job gains did not keep pace," said DiNapoli. "IDAs can be an important catalyst for economic development in our state, but I urge local officials to improve their scrutiny over projects so that taxpayers know if their community is receiving promised jobs and economic benefits."
