ImageApril 17, 2007 (ITHACA, NY) - The Syracuse New Times was feeling “That Old Black Magic” when they announced this year’s Syracuse Area Live Theatre (SALT) Award Nominations. The 2006 Hangar Theatre production of Sammy & Me received three nominations—two for the production and one for co-author and star, Eric Jordan Young.

Sammy & Me was honored with SALT Awards Summer Theatre nominations for Production of the Season, Best Original New Production, and Actor of the Season, for Jordan Young’s tour de force performance, where he took on over 30 characters, including Sammy Davis, Jr.

The world premiere show, a co-production of the Hangar Theatre and Musicalfare in Buffalo, recounted the story of Eric’s life-long fascination with the only African-American member of the famous Rat Pack. Following Sammy from his tap dance beginnings on the “the Chitlin' Circuit” to headliner on the Las Vegas strip he helped to desegregate, Eric unraveled the complexities of being an entertainer caught between his racial identity and his drive to transcend race as a performer.

Young is currently performing in the Broadway company of Chicago, and has recently performed in Ragtime, Seussical: The Musical, and the Burt Bachrach / Hal David musical revue The Look of Love. Other recent credits include Ahrens & Flaherty’s Dessa Rose playing Kaine at Lincoln Center, the Stephen Sondheim Celebration Opening Doors at Carnegie Hall, and Mr. Bojangles: The Ultimate Entertainer.

The 4th Annual SALT Awards Ceremony, a presentation of the Syracuse New Times, will be held on Monday, April 23rd at Syracuse Stage. The event includes a Pre-Awards Party in the Stage Lobby from 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm, the presentation of awards from 7 pm to 9:30 pm and a post-awards party at Phoebe’s in Syracuse.
