posticon SMART TALK: Up To 50% Off

By  Dr. Molto Breve

UP TO 50% OFF AND MORE! Well, which is it? The first two-thirds of that nonsense line sets a limit that the last third contradicts.

A clothing store in nearby Los Libidos, Texas, advertises sales this way. At the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, we always call and ask to have this claim explained. We usually call from the Fowler Lounge, on speaker so we can enjoy our victim’s confusion. Of course, no one can explain it; it’s nonsense meant to obfuscate.

Here in Underbelly, we hear an equally oxymoronic, or maybe just moronic, expression. Fred Johnson says he usually always opens Friendly Fred’s Football and Firearms Museum at 10:00. He hands out free gifts, too, toy guns to the kids.

Bless his heart.

posticon SMART TALK: Volcanic Lava

By Dr. Parley Speake

VOLCANIC LAVA: It’s lava, folks. It all comes from volcanoes.

Some of our patients at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired like to say that it’s a natural instinct to use redundant language. They even describe volcanic lava in the central core of the mountain, which in and of itself can rise up out of a flat plain. Sudden eruptions can completely destroy many native habitats in a short period of time.

Think of it. Molten rock. It must be hot. You think?

Many of our patients who talk like this come from the so-called public service field. Some even teach science to impressionable youngsters.

posticon Kitchen Brings Odysseus Back to Ithaca

Print Print

Composer Kevin Rockower and Playwright/Lyricist Rachel Lampert reunite to finally bring Homer’s Odysseus back to Ithaca! The epic poem contains enough adventures for two musicals. Last year’s Family Fare Series featured part 1 of Odysseus’s story (the Trojan War and the start of the journey home). This year we see Odysseus’s further adventures, including close calls on the rocky seas and encounters with fantastical mythological beings.

You don’t need to have seen Part 1 to enjoy the continuation of the journey. Come be enchanted by the music, the movement, and the cunning of Odysseus as he confronts gods, monsters, Sirens, and suitors. Performances are Saturdays at 1pm & 3pm, Sundays at 1pm, February 17 through March 4 at the Kitchen Theatre.

posticon Talent Show Brings Down the House

Lansing Middle School Auditorium was bursting with cheers as the 2007 High School Talent Show took the stage Saturday.  The crowd was supportive and enthusiastic as they cheered 19 acts that included rock bands, a dramatic reading, comedy skit, instrumental solos and songs.  A show like that could seem long, but it didn't -- there wasn't a dud in the bunch.  It showed a remarkable range of talent that made for a fun night at the theater.

posticon SMART TALK: Two Choices

Smart TalkSmart Talk SMART TALK
By Dr. Will S. Sert

TWO CHOICES: This is a correct expression, but only when used correctly. Many of us forget that it refers to the act of making two choices, as in one from column A and one from column B. A choice is an act of choosing.

When angry parents or writers of software handbooks say, “You have two choices, A or B,” they mean, “You have a choice, A or B.” A and B are alternatives to each other. If the pool is larger than two, each item is an option.

Given A and B, you do have two choices, (1)either or (2)both. Given, say, ten options, you could have over three and a half million choices.

So the next time someone offers you two choices, say thank you and choose two.
