capitalbuilding 120Tom Reed in favor of legislation which would prevent the President from lifting economic sanctions on Iran until they pay court ordered settlements to the families of Iranian terror victims.

"For the sake of these families, we must make every effort to stop the unfair Iranian Nuclear Agreement," said Reed. "I care about ensuring justice for these victims and their families, and this legislation is just one more step to stop Iran from sponsoring terrorism and finally bring some relief to families who have lost their loved ones."

Following the Senate's failure to act on the disapproval resolution of the Iran Nuclear Agreement last month, the President's deal went into effect.  As part of the Agreement, Iran is set to gain over $100 billion in sanctions relief.  However, the nation has to date failed to payout over $43 billion to victims and their families in more than 80 judgments in U.S. Courts.

"Iran has a history riddled with acts of terror and violence that have cost American lives.  No amount of money will ever restore what these families have lost, but it's completely unfair to give Iran more money to cause more harm without putting these families first."

Victims awaiting payouts include two individuals from Western New York. The first is Terry Anderson of Batavia, an Associated Press Correspondent who was abducted in Beirut in 1991.  The second is Diane Campuzano of Greece who was injured in the 1997 bombing of Yahuda Street in Jerusalem. They are owed a combined $753 million according to U.S. Courts.

The legislation now awaits further consideration in the Senate.
