Tompkins County Legislator and former long-time Legislature chair Tim Joseph has submitted his resignation from the Legislature, effective as of end of the day February 19th, the date of the Legislature's next meeting.

Mr. Joseph (D-Town of Ithaca), who has served on the Legislature for the past 15 years, including six years as its chair, is resigning his seat to accept employment outside of county government. Mr. Joseph's future employer has not yet authorized release of information regarding his new position.

In his letter of resignation, submitted to Chair Michael Koplinka-Loehr, Joseph states, "I have greatly enjoyed my 15 years of service on the Legislature, and wish you and all my colleagues the best in your continued service."

Mr. Koplinka-Loehr accepted Joseph's resignation with regret. "We will sorely miss Tim's analytical and leadership skills, which have benefited the County in so many ways during his many years of service," the chairman stated.

Mr. Joseph's District 12 seat will be filled by special election, which the Legislature's Government Operations Committee has recommended take place April 22nd. The election will not be officially scheduled until the full Legislature acts on the proposal at its February 19th meeting.

Mr. Joseph has represented the western portion of Ithaca Town on the Legislature since 1992, and was elected Legislature Chair from 2001 to 2007, serving in that leadership position through the end of last year.
