ImageOn Friday, 05/30/08, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office participated in the statewide "Buckle Up New York" campaign.

The effort was funded through money awarded to the Sheriff's Office by the State of New York Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.  The goal of the campaign is to increase seat belt usage in an effort to reduce serious injury or death from traffic crashes.  As of November, 2007, the New York State Sheriff's Association reported that our State's seatbelt usage rate has dropped to 84%.

Through use of a safety checkpoint located on NYS Route 13 in the area of the Dryden and Lansing Town lines, deputies issued a total of 62 traffic tickets for observed violations.  The violations involved lack of seat belt use, cell phone violations, un-inspected motor vehicles, and unlicensed operation, to name a few.

"Although the Sheriff's Office does not enjoy issuing traffic tickets, we are dedicated to maintaining the safety of those traveling our roads," says Sheriff Peter Meskill.  "The simple practice of routinely buckling up continues to be the most effective way to survive a serious crash."
