schoolvote_120Lansing's $25,275,503 budget passed 552 to 237 Tuesday, with nearly 70% of voters saying yes.  A second resolution that permits the schools to purchase two busses also passed 547 to 224.  Incumbent School Board Vice President Glenn Swanson was reelected with 568 votes.  Tom Robinson (569) and Betsy Galvin ( 510) were also elected to fill seats being vacated by retiring members Richard Thayler and Glenn Cobb.  Virginia Mansfield-Richardson received 322 votes, and one write-in vote was cast for Andra Benson.

The new budget represents an estimated 3.34% rise in the tax rate, a 1.90% rise in the levy, and 3.68% rise in total spending next school year.  School officials estimate that will come to $43 additional dollars per $100,000 of assessed property value for homeowners with the basic STAR exemption.

The Ithaca City School District also passed its $103 million budget 1953 to 773 with 71.64% of the voters saying yes.  That will mean a 2.4% increase in the tax levy.  Voters also approved capital project expenditures and new busses for the coming school year.

Ithaca was less kind to its school board incumbents, with two of the three who ran being ousted.  Thomas A. Clavel was the only incumbent to keep his seat with 1019 votes.  But even Clavel received fewer votes than newcomers Patricia H. Wasyliw (1693) and Christopher A. Malcom (1353).  Joshua Bornstein (1348) was ousted by only five votes, and  Seth Peacock lost his seat with 1447.

The Lansing Community Library also elected three directors for its board.  Julia Berens (586), Craig Trowbridge (552), and Emily Franco (528) were all elected.  Janet Bruno received one write-in vote.
