anndrake_120Anne DrakeLansing School Board President Anne Drake read a statement Monday in support of the proposed $26 million budget the board will put before the public in a May vote.  The budget reflects 2.69% growth ($680,535 more than the current school budget) and a 2% increase in the school tax levy.  Taxpayers will have to make up fo a drastic drop in the value of the AES Cayuga power plant value.  That will account for 3% of an estimated 4.5% rise in the tax rate.

"As a board member and community member I feel compelled to offer a summary of my thoughts regarding the budget development this year, and the overall function of the school in this community.

"I have lived in Lansing my whole life.  I graduated from Lansing High School and had a wonderful experience as a student in the schools, and growing up in the community.  I decided to stay in this community and raise my family here because I knew that they would also have the opportunity to get a great education and a great overall life experience while attending school, church and participating in community activities while they grew up.

"I also decided to run for the Board Of Education 12 years ago because I thought I could help keep the schools on track to deliver a high quality education for all of Lansing's children.  In fact I have been on the board for 12 years and watched my own children move through the school district.

"I take great pride in this school district and am always looking out for the best interests of all students.

"I have listened and participated in this budget collaboration.  I trust the leadership of the district, I trust the teachers, and I trust the staff.  We are all equally committed to the best interests of the children of Lansing.

"I do not want to raise taxes.  However, I know that the tax rate is uncomfortable given the situation with the AES Cayuga PILOT.  But we need to share the burden between the school district and the property owners and still protect the children of Lansing, our most valuable resource.

"The district has made cuts, and is projecting it will use reserves to reduce two thirds of the 2013 budget deficit.  it is asking for a combined tax levy increase for the remaining third.  I do not want any cuts to take place, but I understand the importance of the burden of the community and also the burden on the district.

"I believe this budget preserves the education being offered to our children, and is also fiscally responsible, considering all impacts the district has had to face.

"There is one thing that can never be taken away from a child.  That is their education.  It is our responsibility to make sure that the best education is available and I believe that is what we are doing with this budget."
