ImageMy Mac was getting slow, so I found some checklists on the Web for speeding up a Mac.  One of the things they suggested was clearing parts of OSX that you don't need off of your hard drive, including language support.

That's when I learned that Mac OSX ships with Klingon language support.  Is this why Windows became so overwhelmingly more popular than the Mac?  Was it that Gates supported actual real people while Jobs was supporting fictional characters?  And cranky ones at that?

Or is indicative of the perception that the Mac is fun and Windows is for work?  That perception probably gave Windows the huge marketplace lead it has enjoyed even when Macophiles were protesting that it was easier to use, more intuitive, better for graphics, yada yada.

If that is true the irony is that Klingons would probably choose Windows for being less frilly and less fun.  Another irony is that Klingons aren't typically subtle enough for irony.

But even Klingons might switch to the Mac after the nonsense released in Vista.  Last year Mac sales actually surged in what analysts said was a reaction against Vista.  And as someone who spent a frustrating half hour updating Word to be able to read -- get this -- Word files (from the latest, greatest version of Word) this morning I have to say that I really prefer consistent software that is easy to use and not bloated with hundreds of so-called features that I will never use.

And while my Mac is running faster now, I kind of wish I had left Klingon installed.  I learned this morning that experts estimate there are currently more Klingon-speaking Earthlings than those who speak Esperanto.  You never know...

For those of you who think that computers should have Klingon support, here is a translation of this editorial:
