Troopers Issue Nearly 7,900 Tickets Statewide During Annual Super Bowl DWI Crackdown
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced State Police issued 7,891 tickets and arrested 139 people for impaired driving during the Super Bowl weekend impaired driving crackdown. The STOP-DWI initiative started on Saturday, February 2, and continued through 4 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2019. During the special enforcement period, which was funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Police increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers.
"Super Bowl weekend is one of the most popular events of the year but we want New Yorkers to enjoy it responsibly and we have zero tolerance for reckless or impaired driving," Governor Cuomo said. "These numbers show our efforts to aggressively enforce the law to keep our roads safe are working, and I commend the State Police for their dedication to protecting the lives of New Yorkers during this campaign and throughout the rest of the year."
Acting State Police Superintendent Keith M. Corlett said, "Preventing the avoidable tragedies caused by impaired drivers is a top priority for our Troopers. Getting behind the wheel while impaired at any time is a losing decision that often results in serious consequences - including injuries and death. We urge all New Yorkers to make the smart decision and always make plans for a safe and sober ride home."
Mark J.F. Schroeder, Acting Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Acting Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, said, "We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their efforts to remove impaired drivers from the road, and we hope people learn a valuable lesson to make plans in advance of any celebration for a safe ride home or to stay overnight until they are fit to drive."
State Troopers arrested 139 people for DWI and investigated 456 crashes, including 67 crashes that resulted in injuries, and one fatality.
