ImageLansing hosted its annual 'Kickstart Classic' Track & Field Invitational Saturday when 13 schools participated in the all-day event.  With perfect weather, Lansing's Boys team scored in third place behind Ithaca and Dryden with an overall score of 92.50, and the girls team also came in third behind Ithaca and Dryden with a score of 72.  Bill Levett coaches the girls team of about 25 athletes, with Matt Scheffler coaching more than 40 boys.  ""We usually compete for league championships at the end of May," says Athletic Director Ed Redmond.  "We're usually in the top 3."

Lansing's teams were based in their usual spot in the corner of the track near the refreshments stand.  Other teams set up tents around the field, with the awards stand across from the stands in the center of the track.  Winners were announced as other races and events took place.

Lansing scored first place in several events.  Tiffany Lind, Ryann Cretney, Christine Fuchs, Natalie Usack took first place in 10:33.10 in the 3200 Meter Relay.  Ryann Cretney finished first in 5:06.70 in the 1500 Meter Run, and 2:28.00 in the 800 Meter Run, making a total of three first places for Cretney.

Lansing athletes waiting to compete

On the boys side Rusty Landon finished first in the 110m Hurdles in 15.80, and again in the 400 Meter Dash in 51.60.  Devin Strehle completed the 400m Hurdles in 58.60, also taking first place.  Andy Lockwood took first, scoring 143-9 in discus throwing, and again with 53-9.75 in shot put.

Redmond says the event is an exciting way to start the season, and to check out the competition.  The regular season started Tuesday with Lansing girls pulverizing Union Springs 109 to 23.
