posticon Girls Track Season Finishes at State

This past weekend marked the end of the outdoor track season. Lansing closed their season by sending Seniors Natalie Usack, Tiffany Lind, and Colleen Trowbridge, along with juniors Ryann Cretney, Christine Fucks, and freshman Katy Bland to the New York State Public High School Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Dietz Stadium, in Kingston, New York. Cretney competed in the 2000m steeplechase, and despite a difficult seeding and a hard fall over a barrier, she managed to rally back to post a time of 7:15.77, which was good enough to earn her second place in division II, and ninth overall.

The 4x800mR team of Usack, Lind, Bland, and Trowbridge, displayed their unequaled heart and determination once again as they each put forth their best efforts. Trowbridge stepped up and ran a three second personal record for the team after Cretney fell ill and was unable to compete. The end of the race was particularly hard on the three seniors as it marked the end of their high school athletic carriers. I join the Lansing Community in wishing Natalie, Tiffany, Colleen, and their classmates’ congratulations, and the best of luck.

Thanks for such a great season ladies!

posticon Best Short Course Season Ever for LCATS

ImageThe Lansing Community Aquatic Team recently completed its 2006-2007 short course (25-yard pool) season. Through a tremendous team effort, the CATS were, once again, the Southern Tier Swim League Champions. In addition to the full team effort at STSL champs, several members of the team qualified for, and competed in the Niagara Swimming District Gold Championship Meet. Of approximately fifty teams from Central and Western NY, the LCATs finished in third place at Gold Districts, behind two powerhouse teams from the Buffalo area. This was quite an accomplishment for the CATS, considering it wasn’t long ago the team had a tough time cracking into the top forty at Golds.

As the short course season winds down for many swimmers, it revs up for others who qualify for a variety of upper level championship competitions. Over the last month of the short course season, LCATs sent representatives to Speedo Sectional Championships in Boston, Junior Nationals in Orlando and the Eastern States Zones Championships in Buffalo. There were several swimmer highlights at these meets.

The Lansing Boy's Track and Field team had four boys qualify for the State Meet in Kingston in 5 events. Senior Andy Lockwood set a new IAC record in the Shot put with a toss of 55' 8" (over a foot better than his previous IAC record throw). He also qualified in the Discus with a throw of 162' 9". He was the winner in both events and looks strong going into the State meet. Rick Jones has done a tremendous job in coaching Andy, and I am personally greatful for all that he's done to get Andy to this level.

Senior Rusty Landon qualified in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 15.7. He finished third overall, but was the top Small school finisher in the event. He also took 3rd overall in the 400m dash with a time of 49.78, but will not advance because the top two finishers were both from the small school division.
