posticon Athletics Hall Of Fame Announces Inductees

hof1_120Lindsey Dean Felling (2001), Billie Boles Downs (2001), Carrie Richards McGowan (2001), and the 1993 Section IV, Class C Championship Football Team will be inducted in the Lansing Central School Athletic Hall of Fame on December 27th.  The newly elected inductees will be introduced at 5:30 in the Lansing High School gymnasium.  The festivities then move to the Lake Watch Inn for a cocktail hour at 6:00, dinner at 7:00, followed by the induction ceremony.

The program was begun in 1998 by Athletic Director Ed Redmond.  The inaugural 'Class of 1998' included ten charter members, voted into the Hall Of Fame by a committee of alumni and administrators.  In recent years terams have been inducted as well as individual athletes.

posticon Lansing Bobcat Alex Schutz Signs to Play Baseball at St. Bonaventure

schutzbb_120Lansing Varsity Baseball shortstop Alex Schutz signed Wednesday to play baseball at St. Bonaventure University.  In a ceremony in the Lansing High School gym, Schutz was joined by his coaches, parents, and his teammates as he signed his acceptance papers for the program.  With cameras flashing, Schutz signed, then put a St. Bonaventure sweatshirt on over his Lansing Bobcats shirt.

"The team there seemed like a bunch of hard working guys," he said.  "The Head Coach, Coach Sudbrook is a really good guy.  When I visited I felt like I fit right in.  When you go to the right college you just feel it, and I really felt it there.  It's a perfect fit for me.  When I visited there were some familiar faces.  I played against some of the other guys in 2012 when we won the State Championship."

posticon Lansing Varsity Lady Cats Soccer Team To Play At States

soccer_girlskick120The Lansing Varsity Lady Cats Soccer are playing in the Final 4 for the first time.  The team won last weekend’s NYSPHSAA Class C Regional game against Section 3’s Beaver River at Norwich, NY.

This is the Lady Cats first appearance in the NYS ‘final four’ semi-finals and their second year being coached by Eric Stickel, a Lansing graduate and former soccer player for the Bobcats.  The girls team will take on the Haldane Blue Devils tomorrow (Saturday, November 16 at 9:30am) at TC3.  The NYS Class C Championship game will take place the next day (Sunday, November 17 at 10am) on the SUNY Cortland campus ‘Red’ field.

posticon Ladycats Swimming and Diving Team Continue Undefeated

swim120The Lansing Ladycats Swimming and Diving Team continued their undefeated streak this past Saturday in Watkins Glen by winning the IAC Swimming and Diving Championships in very convincing fashion. The Ladycat swimmers won 10 of 11 swimming events and combined as a team for 488 points, over 100 more then the next closest team.

The day started with a win worth 40 points in the 200 Medley Relay by the team of Senior Isabelle Corgel (Backstroke), Junior Adele Ferris (Breaststroke), Senior Anna Conte (Butterfly) and Junior Aurora Allen (Freestyle) with a time of 1:57.00.

posticon Towner Named First Team Scholar

Lansing graduate, Clement Towner was named a College Swimming Coaches Association First Team Scholar All-America selection, making him one of five Bombers to earn the honor. He finished in second place at the Empire 8/UNYSCSA Championship in the 800-yard freestyle relay, earning him all-state honors and an All-Empire 8 Second Team selection. Towner finished in fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle at the UNYSCSA Championships, also earning an eighth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

A 2011 graduate of Lansing High School, Towner competed for six seasons and earned four varsity letters.   As a high school senior, he finished eighth in the 200 free at the New York State Public High School Association state meet.

swim120Lansing Ladycats Swimming and Diving won 127 to 58 over Waverly, extending their record to 9-0 on the season. Lead by Senior Anna Conte with 1st place finishes in 50 Free, 100 Breast and as part of the 200 Free (Adele Ferris, Katie Weaver, Caroline Dennis) and 400 Free Relay (Rory Allen, Isabelle Corgel, Katie Weaver) teams.

Adele Ferris also had 1st place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 Fly as well as part of the winning 200 Medley(Isabell Cogel, Rory Allen, Grace Ferris) and 200 Free Relays. Ferris's 100 Fly time was a 59.30 which was a new pool and team Record and also a NYSPHSAA Championship qualifying time.

posticon Steelman Named Suny Cobleskill Fighting Tiger Athlete-Of-The-Week

The SUNY Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise announced Monday that freshman Alex Steelman, Ithaca, N.Y., Lansing High School, a member of the women’s swimming & diving team has been named the athletic program’s Fighting Tiger Athlete-of-the-Week.

The talented rookie diver was the team’s top performer at the 2013 Hartwick Relays hosted by Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. on Saturday October 19. Steelman won the one-meter diving competition by posting a score of 264.35 points as Cobleskill placed fourth in the five-team field with a total score of 52 points.

nr_antoniotrianaA commitment to youth soccer and to his community are two of the reasons New Roots Charter School student Antonio Triana is the 2013 New York State Western Youth Soccer Association Male Young Referee of the Year. The Young Referee of the Year award is given annually to a male and female student/youth who demonstrates outstanding skills and promotes the game of Soccer to benefit others.

Triana is a senior at New Roots Charter School, where he ranks in the top 5% of his class academically. 2013 is his fifth year as a referee, and his resume as an official includes officiating at New York State Youth Soccer Championship matches in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Triana previously coached 8 and 9 year olds in a youth recreation soccer league. He currently plays for a TC United Club Soccer team as well as one for his school, and mentors new referees.

soccer_shirt120In Lansing Adam Heck is synonymous with soccer.  Last week was a milestone for Heck as the Bobcats fought their way to a 6-0 victory against Whitney Point, making it Heck's 250th win as coach of the Lansing Boy's Varsity Soccer team.

"Last week he had his 250th win," Lansing Superintendent Chris Pettograsso told the Board of Education Monday.  "His record is 250/72/19.  The boys are doing well!"

Seneca Falls - Senator Mike Nozzolio recently welcomed Cornell University's Head Football Coach Dave Archer and his team to the Mynderse Academy football field in Seneca Falls.  Nozzolio is an alumni of Cornell University and played on the Cornell Big Red football team. Local fans had the opportunity to watch the Cornell scrimmage and meet members of the team after the scrimmage.

posticon PGA Brings Millions of Dollars to Region

nozzolio_pga012013Senator Mike Nozzolio recently congratulated two native sons of Cayuga County, Jeff Corcoran, Oak Hill Country Club Manager of Golf Courses and Grounds, and Dan Farrell, Oak Hill Country Club General Manager, for their efforts to make the 2013 PGA Championship a success. The 2013 PGA Championship was held at the Oak Hill Country Club and attracted tens of thousands of new visitors to the Finger Lakes region. Jason Dufner won the tournament with a score of -10. It is estimated that the PGA tournament generated over $85 million in revenue to the region's economy.
