Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) was honored earlier this month as one of four builders nationally to receive the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Challenge Home, Housing Innovation Award. According to the DOE, Challenge Home builders are in the top 1% of builders in the country meeting the extraordinary levels of excellence and quality.

INHS received the award in recognition of the technological innovation incorporated into the design and construction INHS’ Holly Creek Townhomes located in the Town of Ithaca. INHS shares this honor with the Holly Creek development team members – architecture by Claudia Brenner, engineering by T.G. Miller, landscape design by TWLA, and Avalon Homes, responsible for the construction of the townhomes.

The DOE case study stated that the “brand new townhomes are not only affordable; they are also among the most energy-efficient in the state. All 11 townhomes were built to the requirements of the US Department of Energy’s Challenge Home Program. This means each home meets ENERGY STAR Version 3, complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor airPLUS criteria, has EPA WaterSense-qualifying fixtures, and sports a host of additional features to make them energy-efficient, durable, and comfortable.”

Holly Creek Townhomes are part of INHS’ First-Time Homebuyers Affordable Housing Program that assists low-to moderate income people in obtaining quality housing that enables them to build equity and lasting wealth.  Nine of the first 11 townhomes are already occupied.  Construction of 11 additional townhomes is currently underway and they are scheduled for occupancy by the summer of 2014.
