lcl2The Lansing Community Library recently received its permanent charter from the NYS Board of Regents.

"This recognizes that the library has proven itself to be an integral part of the Lansing community and is here to stay," explained Library Manager Susie Gutenberger.

Only 15 years ago this library was simply a vision of a few community members who then rallied the efforts, contributions and support of hundreds of residents to make it a reality.  Not only did this effort provide the community with a public library, but it also restored and gave new purpose to a historic building that was once a school house and the Lansing Town Hall.  The number of patrons, visitors, items borrowed, and collection materials at LCL increases each year.

Trustee Liz Miller said, "We are continually looking for new ways that the library can meet the needs and wants of the Lansing community, and these ever growing statistics are encouraging as they let us know that we are reaching more and more residents."

Today LCL experiences over 30,000 visits a year and attracts residents for more than just its continually updated and growing collection of books.  LCL offers free Internet access, four computers, loaner laptops and even a tech person dedicated to helping patrons with their own devices.  In addition, the library offers a meeting space for puzzle fanatics, writers, Lego Leagues and even Tai Chi classes.

The library also partners with the Community Arts Partnership and the Lansing Schools to host popular rotating art displays throughout the year. LCL has more than 300 Friends who sponsored many programs at the library last year with topics including money management, holiday ornament making, The Civil War, the history of Salt Point and Science Saturday for kids.

In total, the library hosted over 350 events last year that were attended by more than 7,000 community members.  These programs are advertised via posters and the LCL website, but you can also stay informed of upcoming events by liking Lansing Community Library on Facebook.

The library's Summer Reading Program has become a tradition that kids and adults look forward to each year.  Many fun events are already being planned for this summer building on the theme is Every Hero Has a Story.  The kick-off event for this program combined with a Friends of LCL book sale are scheduled for June 20th, 2015.

According to Trustee President Emily Franco, "The library staff and volunteers are working to develop more LCL traditions like this one that will promote fun, learning and a sense of community throughout the year."
