star_120SewGreen is contributing one hundred girls' dresses to an organization called Little Dresses for Africa. Over the past summer and fall, volunteers sewed the dresses, which are made from pillowcases. They will be shipped to orphanages and schools in central Africa. The dresses were made by SewGreen students as young as eight, and by teen apprentices and adults from the community.

Little Dresses for Africa was founded by Michigan resident Rachel O'Neal, who has received more than 100,000 of the dresses from all around the U.S. O'Neal's efforts were featured recently on an NBC Nightly News segment called "Making a Difference."

"The kids at SewGreen could relate to making something for other children who have very little in their lives," said SewGreen Coordinator Wendy Skinner. "Each dress is unique and very pretty. They are easy to make and a great example of creative reuse."

SewGreen is holding a pillowcase dress sew-in on Saturday, January 29, from 10 am to 2 pm, at its classroom, 112 North Cayuga Street, in downtown Ithaca. Volunteers are invited to make sure each dress is well-made and to pack them for shipping.
