ImageHot wax and vinyl sound as good as they ever did at Angry Mom Records, which is now open in the lower level of Autumn Leaves Used Books at 115 The Commons in downtown Ithaca.

Angry Mom Records stocks a collection of 50,000 albums, specializing in music from the 1960’s to 1980’s, in the genres of rock and roll, jazz, punk, metal, reggae, soul and rhythm and blues. The selection of titles appeals to both first time and serious record collectors.

Owner George Johann says Angry Mom Records is working to  stock and sell an extensive selection of both  ‘45’s and new record albums, noting vinyl is once again gaining in popularity after being replaced by cassettes and then CD’s. Angry Mom Records will also stock and sell new and used turntables, giving vinyl enthusiasts who are browsers more reasons to be buyers.

Angry Mom Records is the 3rd business to open in the Autumn Leaves Used Books building, which also houses the Owl Café along with the book store. Both Angry Mom Records and the Owl Café rent space from Autumn Leaves Used Books and each entity is a separate business housed in the one building.

Angry Mom Records also sells and purchases record collections. Johann says, “I’ve enjoyed digging for records and collections in particular, at collector fairs, flea markets and tag sales for years. Owning and running Angry Mom Records allows me to work at something I truly enjoy.” Record collectors and owners who have collections to sell can contact Johann for a quote. Johann himself is a collector of rare punk and psychedelic albums, and pre-war 78 r.p.m. records.

Johann previously managed Midnight Records in Manhattan, which was one of the largest mail-order record stores in the country. He returned to Ithaca at the suggestion of Autumn Leaves Used Books owner Joe Wetmore, who has sold record albums for years, through a consignment agreement with The Bop Shop in Rochester. Angry Mom Records will continue stocking records from The Bop Shop.

Wetmore says the opening of Angry Mom Records is a win-win situation for everyone. “George Johann is a serious, experienced record dealer and collector who knows music and knows records. His decision to open Angry Mom Records and still honor Autumn Leaves’ agreement with the Bop Shop will benefit the Bop Shop by moving more of their records… it benefits Autumn Leaves Used Books by allowing me to focus on my specialty, which is books. And, it benefits the community because we have a new, independent business in the heart of a district that caters to shoppers who are seeking something other than the mass market, big box environment.”

Johann coined the name for Angry Mom Records from his own experience with his parents, who often expressed concern about the amount of money he spent on records and comic books during his teen years.
