fd truckdriver120Lansing Fire District Treasurer George Gesslein confirmed Tuesday that the tax rate for fire taxes will be 90 cents, down from 94 cents last year.  With two major capital projects complete, and healthy reserves for upcoming projects, Gesslein says that even with the lower tax rate he expects to be able to add 300,000 new dollars into reserves.

"The budget was also made with a lower assessment for the district," noted Fire Commission Chairman Robert Wagner.

The overall taxable assessment is down this year from $1,330,483,349 to $1,327,310,991.  That means there is less taxable property value to draw funds from, but Gesslein says the district can lower the tax rate this year, and projects it can be kept it at 90 cents until 2019.  He says that projection is firmer for at least three years in the future, but notes that unexpected events can impact the tax rate.

A public budget hearing is scheduled for October 21, after which the fire commissioners will vote to approve the budget.
