track1Out of seventeen teams, Newark Valley girls seized the day and claimed victory at the Section IV Class C Track & Field Championships held at Sidney High school last Thursday evening.  Three other teams were on their heels; Elmira Notre Dame was runner-up followed by Sidney and then Lansing, with just ten points separating second from fourth place.

Lansing girls continued their strong season with several impressive performances on a hot and competitive day.  Junior Emma Dhimitri started her day with a big personal best and a third place finishe in the 100M hurdle in a race that saw first, second, and third place each separated by a hundredth of a second.  Her freshman teammate, Liz Barre, also made finals and scored for Lansing with a fifth place finish.

Dhimitri continued her day with a runner-up finish in the 400M hurdles just behind Dryden senior Abbey Yatsko who has dominated in the event all season long.  Yatsko notably won the the 400M hurdles after running to victory by nearly one second in the 400M dash.  Much like the 400M hurdles, where Yatsko and Dhimitri battled it out well ahead of the rest of the field, END's Chase Yoder and Lansing eighth-grader Catie Eisenhut toed the line together in the 1500M run after frequent match-ups in the last few weeks.  Yoder took first place with Eisenhut just two seconds behind, with both runners once again clocking in under five minutes.

Also scoring on the track for the Bobcats was sophomore sprinter Miya Kuramoto, running to sixth and fifth in the 100M and 200M dash, respectively.  Both sprint races were led by 1-2 finishes by junior Courtney McNeil of Newark Valley (last year's state champion in both events) and sophomore Mallory Stillman of Sidney.  Lansing sophomore Leigh Miller has steadily improved all season long, and after sitting out last year's spring season due to injury, she climbed the seedings and scored for her team in the 3000M run after also running a very strong leg of the 3200M relay.  All three Ladycat relays scored big, with the 3200M team of Sam Mauser, Mikaela Garcia, Miller, and Eisenhut running to 3rd place behind Unatego and END and the 1600M relay of Mauser, Garcia, Eisenhut and Dhimitri also taking third, with END and Newark Valley securing first and second.

The 400M sprint relay of Meghan Matheny, Emily Gallagher, Gwen Gisler, and Kuramoto had a breakthrough day with a big season best, securing a runner-up finish behind Newark Valley.  In addition to a speedy relay, junior Gallagher also scored for Lansing in the long jump and led the Lansing pole vaulters once again as she, Gisler, and Matheny stood 2-3-4 on the podium with Tioga's Malley Bowen winning the event.

In the boys competition, the teams of Dryden and Trumansburg both vied for the sectional title with Dryden earning 112 points to Trumansburg's 101.  Sidney took third with 74 points.  Lansing boys were twelfth.  Dryden was led by seniors Tor Wildenstein and Liam Joyce.  Wildenstein won the 400M dash, 200M dash, and long jump and took second in the triple jump.  Joyce won the 100M dash, took second in the 200M dash to his teammate, and anchored Dryden's winning 400M and 1600M relay teams.

Scorers for Lansing included senior Jacob Lange whose senior year has been filled with personal records on the cross-country course and track.  Lange took sixth place in the 1600M run and ran with teammates Jason Littlefair, Nate Fleishman, and Devin McCartney to sixth position in the 1600M relay.  The Lansing 400M relay team of Tyler Ayers, Xavier Gell, James Blair, and Luke Winslow also secured sixth place.  Sophomore Gell vaulted to fourth place in the pole vault, with the event won by Trumansburg's Jack Murphy.  Sophomore Alex Powers has demonstrated continued improvement in the throws, and with a new personal record in the shot put, he claimed fifth place.  The event was won by Sidney's Collin Karl.
