The Tempest was performed by Lansing High School Friday, October 20th, Saturday, October 21st, and Sunday, October 22nd .

The Tempest, written by William Shakespeare, was his final play. He wrote it in 1610-1611. This play is classified as a romance, which, in Shakespeare's time was not like a tragedy or a comedy. It is somewhere in between. The Tempest is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays because of its haunting, dream-like quality.

The play starts in the midst of a powerful storm called up by the magician, Prospero (Will Hicks) Twelve years ago, Prospero was the duke of Milan-but his brother, Antonio (Kate Schuttenberg), usurped his dukedom with the help of the king, Alonso (Ben Veaner). Prospero was exiled and cast to sea with his daughter, Miranda (Louisa Alsen). Only the kindness of the nobleman Gonzalo (Susan Lin), saved their lives.

Now, Antonio and Alonso are sailing past Prospero’s island, and he hopes to use his magic to make them repent and restore him to his rightful place. With the help of his spirit, Ariel (Katie Bruno), he wrecks his enemies’ ship and disperses the passengers about the island. Prospero orchestrates a series of tests and trials for the nobles stranded on his island.

He leads the king’s son, Ferdinand (Joe Lyon), to fall in love with Miranda. Antonio, Alonso, and the king’s treacherous brother, Sebastian (Alyssa Wasenko), are made to confess their guilt. And in the meantime, Prospero’s resentful slave, Caliban (Max Mackenzie), convinces two of the shipwrecked sailors to try to kill the magician. At last, Prospero reveals himself, dispensing both justice and forgiveness.

He promises to return them all to Italy the next day, where Ferdinand and Miranda will be married and Prospero will resume his dukedom. Before leaving the island of his exile, Prospero sets his spirits free and gives up his magic forever.

The play was directed by David Kossack and Kyle Schantz- Hilton. The cast included Shawn Hathaway, Brendan Hammond, Ben Veaner, Susan Lin, Alyssa Wasenko, Kate Schuttenberg, Louisa Alsen, Will Hicks, Katie Bruno, Max Mackenzie, Joe Lyon, Bethany Sharpless, Mairi Cardone, Kim Garnett, and Jess Uhrovcik.
