antisafe_120Corning – Tom Reed’s campaign Sunday announced that Reed has become the first candidate in New York to sign the Shooters Committee on Political Education (SCOPE) anti-SAFE Act pledge to publicly support the repeal of the New York SAFE Act and oppose any similar gun-ban legislation at the federal level. His campaign used the occasion to criticize Tompkins County legislator Martha Robertson, who is challenging him for his Congressional seat in November's election.

Reed joined the United Gun Owners of New York in Ovid Sunday to address the crowd and become the first candidate to sign the pledge.

"As a life-long hunter and sportsman, Tom's views on the Second Amendment are very clear,” said campaign Communications Director Katherine Pudwill. “Since he took the oath of office he has worked to ensure that the constitutional freedoms of our friends and neighbors in the Southern Tier are never compromised. In contrast, Martha Robertson voted in support of the SAFE Act and served as chair of the only county legislature in upstate New York that has yet to oppose the legislation. It's no wonder she's getting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from anti-Second Amendment extremists like Nancy Pelosi. We call on Martha Robertson to sign the pledge today.”

Robertson, was at the Guthrie Corning Hospital Tuesday where she says many victims of Reed's medical debt collection business were originally treated.  Robertson says he had not divested his company quickly enough according to House rules, and three years after he was originally elected she says the divestiture is still not complete.

"Congressman Reed has confirmed the existence of ongoing communication with the House Ethics Committee for violations of House rules," Robertson said. "What exactly is the nature of correspondence between Tom Reed and the Ethics Committee on this matter? We demand that he release any correspondence between his lawyers and the taxpayer-funded House Ethics Committee. Congressman Reed is saying he is cooperating with the Ethics Committee, but how do we know? Without releasing all correspondence, Congressman Reed can whitewash the matter and avoid accountability to the voters of the Southern Tier. Tom Reed must come clean and release any and all documents exchanged between his lawyers and the House Ethics Committee."
