lightningTompkins County and the Town of Enfield, as of Wednesday afternoon, have declared local emergencies related to response and recovery from last week’s weather.

Tompkins County Director of Emergency Response Lee Shurtleff reports that both entities have suffered significant public damages in excess of $400,000 as a result of the storm that occurred last Thursday and Friday, August 8 and 9.

Shurtleff cautions that various waterways and infrastructure have damages to the point that public and private property is imperiled, and that severe damages will likely result with any subsequent weather events.  He notes that significant stream restoration and remediation is needed that is beyond the capacity of local government to manage.

The Emergency Declarations are a means to enable local government to take emergency protective and preventive actions to mitigate the situation.  Tompkins County is seeking assistance from New York State as the assessment of damages continues.
