The Lansing Community Aquatics Team (LCAT) has competed in several meets since beginning season competition on October 28th. On that date, the CATS traveled to Mexico, NY to swim in the Mexico Sprint Meet. The CATS won the meet and came away with several individual high point awards in the process. The Mexico meet was followed by the team’s first league meet in mid-November. Lansing played host to Southern Tier Swim League meet #1. The CATS had an incredible team performance throughout, with the younger and older swimmers destroying personal best times in record fashion.

This trend continued, meet to meet, as the team swam in the Silver IMX meet in Binghamton, the STAR Short Course Invitational in Buffalo, STSL #2 and in the STSL Distance Meet. Over the season’s course to date, swimmers have broken and over 60 club short course records. Kevin Miller, Francis Schickel, Ryan McElfresh, Jedidiah Dewey, Erin McElfresh, Ryan Nicholson, Bryce Stanhope, Thomas Towner, Ronan Corgel, Faadhil Moheed, Emma Otto-Moudry, Emily O’Brien, Conor Stanhope, Claire Toal, Erin O’Brien, Sadie Smith, Amanda Burke, Matt Heise, Kevin Nicholson, Joe Buffone, Graham Graffin, John Nord, Nikki Dean, Nicole Heise, Sterling Gell, Jake Sangren, Aaron Mychack, and Hans Roser all played roles in record setting performances.

Of particular note were Jake Sangren’s 53.88 swim in the 100 backstroke at the STAR Invite and Ryan Nicholson’s 19:42.83 in the 10-and-under 1650 (mile) freestyle at the STSL Distance Meet. Jake’s swim is close to a Junior National cut time. Ryan’s 1650 set a new Niagara District Record for that event. Additionally, his 1000 split time of 11:59.64 on his way to the 1650 came within a few seconds of breaking Ryan Lochte’s Niagara District Record in the event. For those who do not know the name Ryan Lochte, you will by Beijing 2008. He’s like Michael Phelps, only cuter (so I’m told by several of our younger girls).

More impressive than the record count has been the total team effort throughout the course of the early portion of the season’s practices and meets. Every LCAT swimmer has made great improvement, with many swimmers cracking into “BB” and higher motivational time standards, hitting Silver times and Gold times.

The enormous level of practice and meet commitment shown by teammates has been key to individual and team successes.
