nascar 120Albany – Members of the Watkins Glen International team and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship driver Colin Braun traveled to the State capital this week to meet with legislators and open a New York State Motorsports Exhibit in the Empire State Plaza.

In a related move, both houses of the Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo acted on a joint Legislative Resolution to proclaim April 19-25, 2015 as 'Motorsports Appreciation Week' across The Empire State.

posticon Two Lansing Athletes Sign For College Teams

maxbensign 120Lansing High School senior athletes Ben Eisenhut and Max Jordan made it official Monday: Jordan signed to pole vault at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Eisenhut signed to join the Cross Country and Track and Field team at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.  Both athletes were joined by their families, coaches school administrators and teammates as they formally signed their acceptances.

"I'm really excited to be part of the Canisius program," Eisenhut said.  "(Canisius Cross Country and Track and Field) Coach Huckle came up to me after I had a good race at the McQuaid Invitational.  I was skeptical at first, but I had the greatest time when I visited.  The guys were awesome, the coach was awesome and the school was awesome.  It couldn't be a better fit.  i am so excited to be part of an awesome team that has a lot of potential to do well in the future."

posticon Tennis Bobcats Open Season With Three Wins

tennisThe Lansing Bobcats opened it's 2015 tennis season with three wins as it pursues it's 6th consecutive league crown. With seniors Emily Schweitzer, Matt Robinson, Sara Gisler and Audrey Montague competing in various doubles positions, complimented by the Buchanan brothers at the #3 and #4 singles spots and led by 9th graders Zoli Csaki and Nick Parkes playing at #1 and #2 singles respectively the Bobcats looked to a combination of experience and youth to bolster the squad.

In opening matches against Watkins, END and S. Cayuga the Buchanan brothers secured victories at the #3 and #4 spots while the brothers Robinson- Matt and Chris- secured 3 victories each in doubles play as the team went on to win 20 out 21 total matches.

Lansing moved to 4-0 on the season beating Whitney Point 7-4. Lansing had a strong pitching performance again From Mattie Arcangeli striking out 9 batters and surrendering 9 hits over 7 innings. Arcangeli has 40 strikeouts in 4 games. Offensively Lansing had 10 hits on the day including multiple hits from Kala Mattoon 2-2 RBI, Kennedy Todi 2-3  and Margot Miller 2-3 with two RBI.

golf3The Lansing Girls Varsity Golf team recently began league play after struggling to find meaningful opportunities for practice this spring.   The majority of practices were centered around practicing putting in the library, chipping plastic balls into nets  and reviewing golf rules, strategies, and etiquette.  Even though limited in terms of real-world practices the Lansing girls have gotten off to a strong start this year.

The Lansing Girls Golf team travelled to Willowcreek Golf Course in Big Flats for a three team match on April 14th.

While continuing in his current role with the historic New York road course, Printup will lead the Americrown team in strategy for profitability, a successful execution of Daytona Rising food and beverage, and enhancing overall value and operations. Printup will also continue with his oversight of Michigan International Speedway, according to an ISC release.

posticon Crown City Volleyball Club 7-1 At Ticann Invitational

volleyball120The Crown City Volleyball club team with Lansing Varsity volleyball players Katherine Babuka, Gianna Fezza, and Cassidy Towner competed in the 2015 TiCann Invitational in Tioga Center this March 22nd.   The field consisted on 15 U-18 travel teams from New York and Pennsylvania.

After splitting the first match, the Vipers tore through their pool going undefeated in three more matches to finish with a 7-1 record.    The successful pool play earned the girls a first round bye as the playoff rounds started. The Vipers first faced strong host TiCann team with in a single game elimination match.  Jumping out to a quick lead, the Vipers easily outscored the host team winning the match 25-10.  The win advanced the Lansing girls and the Viper team to the Gold Medal game for first place.

posticon Lansing Volleyball Players Play In Championship Game

volleyball2 120Three players from the Lansing High School Varsity Volleyball team competed in the 2015 Great Nor’Easter Tournament held in the Albany area on March 7-8 with the Crown City Volleyball Club.   Lansing senior outside hitter Cassidy Towner, junior setter Gianna Fezza, and junior middle blocker Katherine Babuka joined the Crown City team along with 31 other teams in the 18U division for the large regional tournament.

The tournament started off slowly with the Crown City Vipers dropping their first two matches in very close sets against strong regional clubs from across New York state.   The team was able to regroup and win their next 4 matches to earn a first round bye into the Championship round in the Bronze Division.   The semi-final match ended up being close with both games going to extra points with Crown City VC and LIVC both taking a game each.  A third tie break game went the Lansing girls way with a 15-13 win to advance to the Championship match.   In the Championship round, in two close games, Crown City lost both games 25-23 to finish with the silver medals.

posticon Eight Lansing Athletes Named Athletic Excellence MVPs

fe 120ESPN Ithaca/WPIE's Nick Karski was at the Lansing Board Of Education meeting Monday to honor eight fall and winter season Lansing athletes who won ESPN Ithaca & Ehrhart Fueling Excellence Athlete of the Week Awards.  Karski reviewed the achievements that led to their being honored.  Lansing MVPs honored were Alex Purcell, Caroline Dennis, Joe Koch, Sarah Gisler, Tim Kelley, Adele Ferris, Shea McCartney and James Overhiser.  Each of the MVPs received a T-shirt and a $50 donation, for a total of $400, to the Lansing Booster Club.

"Last year it was the MVP of the game during high school sporting events that we broadcast," Karski said.  "This year we decided to expand it to recognize student athletes' achievements on the field and on the court, in the swimming pool, wherever it may be, from all around Tompkins County and all around Section IV."

wellsAurora, N.Y. – Wells College announced plans Tuesday to renovate the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing, a primary extension of the Schwartz Athletic Center that serves as the hub of intercollegiate athletics on campus. Extensive renovations are expected to be completed in time for the 2015-16 academic year.

Planned improvements include lighting upgrades, a wall-to-wall gymnasium floor, increased seating capacity for spectators and increased support spaces for athletic training. In addition to its immediate impact on student-athletes across the College's 14 NCAA Division III varsity programs, the new facility will better support the Wells educational experience including physical education courses and student life activities.

Groton Senior Darren Ostrander defeated Maine-Endwell's Kobe Garrehy 4-2 during the Division II sectional championships held in Binghamton February 13 and 14th.

Ostrander earned the title Most Outstanding Wrestler on conclusion of the two-day event and brought home the first Section 4 wrestling championship title to Groton since 1979. All 30 Section 4 champions crowned earned automatic placements into the state tournament in Albany. A focused athlete, Ostrander finished third at last season’s Section 4 Division II championships and set his sights set on winning ever since. Ostrander strategically gave up playing football and joined the cross-country team to train and tone up for wrestling, dropping seven pounds to compete in the 138 pound weight class.

posticon Lansing High School To Build Stronger Leaders

school high120Athletic Director Adam Heck told the Lansing Board of Education Monday that a new program will help student athletes to become better leaders.  The Lansing High School Student-Athlete Leadership Development Program will try to attract team captains as well as any Lansing student who wants to hone his or her leadership skills.  

"We always evaluate our sports program," Heck said.  "The bottom line of sports is to try to create better kids, better people for the future.  We're hoping with this program we can build better relationships with our kids at Lansing so when they move on they're more confident.  They're stronger leaders, they manage time better, and they're able to work with their peers."
